We left Byron Bay at 8am and headed to Spot X where we were going to have our first ever encounter with a surf board and the waves! We arrived about 12:30pm and our lesson was at 1:00pm. Everyone was pretty nervous as this was the first time for most of us.
There were 10 of us on the bus and not only were we all surfing together but we were also all sleeping together in the same room! It was a nice place though and we even had a duvet which we hardly ever had in Queensland!
Before any of us hit the waves we had to be given our surf lesson. We learnt about the different parts to a surf board, different types of waves and currents. We had a lot of 'dumping' waves that day, these are the big waves that curve over so surfers can surf within them, I'm not sure we quite manages to do that but we may have tried to lol!
After we had our theory lesson we had to get our wetsuits on and grab a surf board and head to the beach for our practical lesson. As the surf boards are quite heavy and akward to carry we had to carry them in two's, so me and Zoe were given two surf boards between and we waddled off to the beach.
On the beach we all laid our surf boards out in a big circle to face our instructor. He taught us where to lay on the surf board and what position to get in to stand up on the board. This all seemed very easy in practice! We then had to do some funky warm up stretches before he finally let us all loose in the water! After attaching the surf board to our legs we dragged the heavy surf board into the water and were off!
You go into the water waist high and you have to keep the surf board in front of you otherwise if a wave comes it will hit you in the head! The waves were quite nice to start off with and when I (Michelle) caught my first wave I thought it was absolutely amazing! It was quite relaxing laying on a surf board floating back to the shore. Unfortunately not all the waves I caught ended up as smooth as my first one! There were a few where I fell off the board as the wave came and ended up half drowning with the surf board on top of my head, which wasn't that fun and salt water really doesn't taste that nice! However, we both did manage to stand up even if it was with a bit of help! The instructor would every now and then grab the board from behind tell you to jump on just as a wave would come and steady the board as we got closer to shore, he would then tell us when to stand up. I did manage to stand up as I said but I think I done a very good impression of a flapping bird! Zoe was better than I was and managed to stand without the help of the instructor even if it wasn't for very long!
We had about three hours surfing and it was very tiring, most of the girls had grazes on their knees and I think everyone had been hit somewhere at some point by the surf board! It was absolutley brilliant though and I would definitely recommend it, its been one of the greatest things I have done in Australia and I think everyone really enjoyed it.
After surfing we all had a nice shower to wash off the sea water and then headed to the outdoor tv room where the professional photographer, who had been on the beach with us was showing the pictures of us surfing on the big screen. Some of them were quite funny to watch but others (mainly the boys) were really good.
That night we all had our tea then was meant to be heading off to the beach for a beach party. Unfortunately the moment we all sat on the beach it started to rain. We left shortly after and went back to the tv room with some others from the group whilst some people stayed on the beach.
We had a really good night - playing jenga (which became extremely tense at one point), playing drinking games (including drinking straight cordial) and chatting. We also had fun with the possum which sadly may now be suffering from a phobia of cheese and bin lids!
Overall, surf camp was absolutely brilliant, it was great fun and definitely worth doing!
The next day we were all woken up at 6am and all had aches and pains all over our body, but it was worth it!!!!
