Our road trip started with a trip to South Australia we left Melbourne before 8 am topping the car up and heading over the west gate bridge for the last time both deciding that we’ll be back at some point in the future to Melbourne. With the garage out of up and go we had a break for breakfast just outside the ring road before continuing onwards. We passed salt lakes and small towns with the weather warming and eventually came to a town called Keith stopping for a few pictures as you would. Late evening we arrived at our destination in South Australia a town called Normanville around 40kms away from the ferry town of Cape Jervis, setting up the tent and airbed for the first time at dusk watching the weather slowly start to move in. We ate in the camp kitchen before retiring to bed and trying to get some shut eye, the wind wasn’t going to let us getting faster and stronger with rain lashing down. The tent blowing this way and that sides lifting up, we lasted an hour or so before we made for the car and slept in there that night with the winds howling away outside at over 70km/h.
We woke a little late the next day and fearing missing the ferry left the campsite in a hurry on Saturday 28th but it turns out we had gained 30 minutes on the time difference when crossing the boarder which was kind of handy. Arriving at the terminal with plenty of time it was clear it wasn’t going to be the best of crossing with the wind whipping up 3m seas. Anyways we boarded and left for KI arriving 1h 15m later for a crossing that’s normally around the 40min mark. It was heavy going and a lot of pale faced people alighted us among them. A sleep outside the visitors centre later and with the weather still really rough we checked into a motel for the night which was much more easier on the sleep. The weather did clear enough for us to watch the pelicans fight for a free feed each seeing which one could swallow the most.
On Sunday 29th the weather had started to clear a little the wind had died down but there was still the occasional shower to contend with. We checked out a few weather friendly places first the island honey pot with its pure linguine bees, the eucalyptus distillery where they produce Australia’s only eucalyptus oil (all the rest is overseas) and they care for orphaned wildlife there to they had a Kangaroo called Luna. We made for the west side of the island passing and stopping to see an echidna on the way reaching our destination KI camp ground, we went on there walks seeing more wildlife some wallabies, another echidna and koalas. Another restless nights sleep followed with heavy winds blowing the tent about.
On Monday 30th we had to catch a ferry early evening and made the most of a sunny day on the island, heading first to the flinders chase NP seeing more koalas and a TIGER SNAKE crossing the road. The rocks were pretty awesome huge sea weathered boulders moulded into different shapes by the elements with caves, crevices and niches. We went to see the sea lions in seal bay and walked on the each with them for some it was that special time and they were getting a little close. We stopped at a few nice little bays along the way before reaching Penneshaw in time for our ferry back to the big island. Once there we made for Adelaide (our 6th aussie capital city) getting to the campsite just in time to put up the tent before Dark.
