Will-and-Marge's Great Adventure to Alaska
Miles to next Stop: 138
Time Leaving: 7:50 Temp. 42
States Today: Montana
Accrued miles to Date: 2131
Saying for the day: "Home isn't a place, it’s a feeling"
We have a short drive today and we’ve had a lot of rain showers and even some rain mixed with snow in one area. A quick stop in Billings for some groceries (last stop before Canada) and when we were checking out the cashier looked like someone we almost all know: Christine Jason! She could be a twin to Christine. What fun. So of course, we had to chat and she was happy to do a lot of chatting, mostly about WalMart and the great place it is to work and all of the benefits received. It was nice to hear some good information on WalMart. She’s obviously a satisfied worker. She works double shifts and we asked if it was because WM can’t get help or doesn’t want to hire. They advertise everywhere but just can’t get applicants. She said the health care plan is great and it covers her whole family. Her husband has a degree and not as good a health plan at his work. Also, the benefits are incredible, health insurance, matches investment funds, discounts on Verizon, flying, hotels, etc. and she makes more money than her husband. She also said, quietly to us, that the biggest reason that people don’t come out to work for WM (in Billings) is that the Gov’t is giving too many handouts and these people have been doing this for generations, so it’s their way of life and thus won’t even apply for work.
Then in the parking lot, as you’ll see in one of the pictures, we ran into Joe who had just returned from a spot in Montana where you can pick up elk antlers. Joe and dog Bo, (a big hunting dog with lots of spots and looong ears) hauling a load of antlers in the back of his truck. We asked about it and he said this was “shedding season” time for the Elk and for those who wanted could go out and gather the antlers to make a little money. He said it’s not very profitable as he needed to get a motel and food for two days. But he does enjoy getting outdoors and into the mountains. He gets $13.00/lb for the antlers. Of course we had to ask if it was all right to get a picture for our Blog.
