St. Patrick's Day (or St. Paula's day for Miss Etherington) usually means lots of Guiness for us two. However, being stuck in the a******* of nowhere raised a few problems in doing this. Our first stop of the day was Larrimah. Thankfully one of the few buildings in this exceptionally small settlement was the Pink Panther Pub. So despite the fact it was only 9:30am, we cracked open our first beer of the day, served to us by a big scary biker dude who opened our beers by putting the bottle cap into his forearm & just twisting it off!! Out the back of the pub they had a miniture zoo with various birds, snakes & other reptiles, some wallabies, emus & a couple of saltwater crocodiles. The highlights of the zoo were running up & down next to the emu pen so that they chased you back & forth. But easily the best moment was Amylou crouching next to a wallaby for a photo (she is petrified of almost every animal you could possibly think of) & the wallaby lept up & grabbed her bag. I don't think I've seen anyone move so fast before!
We headed off to our next stop, Daly Waters. Once again, conveniently there was a pub, & this time they served Guiness! We played a few games of pool & it pains me to say that Joel beat me 3-0. It seems that he can only beat me when I have a broken shoulder & my arm in a sling!! Out the front of the pub, we were able to have a go at Outback bowling consisting of 6 pins & a very mishapened stone bowling ball that looked like it came right out of the Flintstones. I think I'll definitely be sticking to bowling alleys though as I didn't manage to hit a single pin....again I blame the broken shoulder. ;-)
Next stop on our tour/pub crawl was Attack Creek. Shock horror, there was no pub there.....so let's move on!
We headed to Tennant Creek where our camp was located, there was no pub, but at least there was a gas station that sold some tinnies. We stocked up on beers for the evenings camp & headed off to Camp Juno, stopping off at Mary Ann Dam for a swim (a man made lake built specifically for swimming so that people didn't get eaten by crocs). We arrived at Camp Juno & soon wished that we hadn't. The showers were mozzie infested, the beds had bedbugs in them so we all woke up with red blotchy legs & there were stray dogs lurking around the site & in the dark you could only see their eyes watching you. Freaky!!
