Rather than giving ourselves a lie-in, we had booked to start our Red Rocket tour from Darwin to Alice Springs that morning. So around 6am we boarded our bus & met another new group of folk. Unfortunately for the two Yorkshire lasses, they had booked on the same tour, so they had unwittedly become our new tour buddies. Poor them! We met our new driver called 'Doc' (he looked like a younger version of Christopher Lloyd in 'Back to the Future') who would be driving us around for the next 3 days.
The majority of the morning was spent driving, however we did get a chance to stop in Adelaide River. At this pit stop there was a pub that had its own little shrine to Crocodile Dundee. The centrepiece was the bull that had been used in the first film. He used to be kept outside in a pen, where customers tried to outdrink the bull in order to win prizes. Rumour has it that he died from alcohol poisoning. After his death, he was stuffed & put in the pub next to the bar (although they had to cut 2 inches off his hooves in order for him to fit in).
We made our way to Mitmiluk National Park in Katherine to start our 9km hike around Katherine Gorge. We managed to cope with the sweltering heat mainly thanks to the amazing views & the swimming sessions at a waterfall. On the way back to camp, we stopped off at Katherine town centre & picked up some beers for the evenings campfire. After a week of antibiotics & painkillers for my collarbone, I was finally allowed to drink again!!
After dinner we all gathered around the campfire for some beers & a chat to get to know each other. Unfortunately, we had a very loud, annoying 21 year old American 'dude' on our tour, so it was quite hard to hear anyone else or get a word in edgeways. Everything was extremely over the top & exaggerated with him or 'kick ass' as he kept telling us. Thankfully he wasn't too clued up on the English/Aussie sarcastic humour, so a few of us managed to bring him down a peg or two, before he marched off to bed declaring that everyone was 'hating on him'. We all stayed up a bit longer drinking & playing cards. It was KICK ASS!!
