Today we left Queenstown which was a shame as it was one of our favourite stops to date. We were headed to an overnight stop in Omarama (don't go, it's rubbish).
It was another lovely sunny day so we decided to stop on the way at lake Wanaka. When we got there we changed into our summer gear, took out the outdoor table and chairs and sat in the sun with our lunch whilst looking out at the lake (better give us the bus passes now!).
About 2pm we packed up and headed on to Omarama. When we arrived it soon became clear that food might be a problem since it was sadly lacking in eating establishments. Still we remained optimistic, went for a run and then headed to the local pub. Picture a pub in the sticks, decor very 1970's social club, deer heads mounted on the walls and lots of men wearing flannel shirts. Being the only female surrounded by so much testosterone made me feel very uncomfortable and a quick glance at the menu, a meat lovers paradise, made me realise that this would be a brief stop only. After a speedy glass of vino we decided to try the only hotel in the village which apparently offered good quality food. Hmm, let's just say it was the worst meal I have endured to date in NZ. The only option was a veggie curry. When it arrived I quickly noticed that it comprised of 3 small pieces of cauliflower and sauce, absolutely nothing else. It was also covered in mango chutney for some unknown reason and quite frankly was inedible. After Stephen ate his fish and chips we went back to the campervan where I cooked some emergency pasta. Needless to say we left swiftly the following morning....!
