We awoke after a restless, hot and noisy night to another big day planned. There was a quick session trying out the whip (another little boy in park was cracking his and everyone was packing up), Stuey showing quite a bit of natural aptitude (or a complete lack of fear I’m not sure which). We headed in via bus to the city after Matty dropped off the car in Palmerston for a service. Skye and I befriended an older couple and chatted all the way in. There was black smoke all around, think quite a few fires started last night, one close to the reserve behind us- no wonder they try and burn off so much before July 1st! We dutifully checked out the oil tunnels from WWII which Stu lost interest in fairly quickly. The information posted along the walls of the tunnel was quite interesting, lots of pictures of wartime Darwin. It was lunchtime by now and we ate our weight in Mexican food before settling back on the foreshore to watch Matt and kids whale themselves on the giant inflatables for an hour. Lily earnt cringe worthy admiration from the waiting group at the end of the session as her father launched her screaming metres into the air for a grand finale.
While Matt caught the bus back out to pick up the car, Skye and I gelatoed up the kids and walked around to Government and Parliament Houses. Although initially enticed by the air conditioning, we actually spent a fair bit of time in Parliament House, it was a really accessible and interesting visit. After spending a bit of time in a dodgy souvenir shop we headed back for the promised wave pool encounter, ended up being only one session of waves left but that was enough. Matt met us back in there in time for dinner, which was a ‘metre pizza’ and time to take some very tired kiddos home to bed. No rest for the mummies though who had a few more hours together until Skye flew out, to sit at the airport and chat. I so loved having Skye around and we jammed so much into our 3 days all together it has taken a long time to get to writing them up! I think we will both treasure our Darwin time and I’m so grateful Skye carved time out of her busy life to fly and meet us.
