What a lovely day just cruising the river and harbour in Strahan. This town has 300 days of rain a year but we were exceptionally lucky with a beautiful one. Sailed out thru Macquarie Harbour heading towards Macquarie Heads to Hells Gate so called by the convicts as it was their chance of life before being confined to Sarah Island for the term of their natural lives. Last time we were here there was no way we could get out thru the boiling cauldron of water at the entrance of the heads but today was superb even by the Captain's standards. Only slightly rough but the wind was blowing from South America and was strong but so fresh and clean. turning around we headed towards the salmon farms that dot the harbour, these supply 85%of the fish for commercial sale unfortunately not able to buy for personal use at all. Then on to Sarah Island where we thoroughly enjoyed an historical performance by a guide and then back to the boat for lunch. Sailed up the Gordon River slowly to enjoy the serenity and beauty of this wilderness. Had a walk thru the bush to see a 3500 years old Huon Pine tree, luckily for us as this is going to be protected from us boring tourists soon. Our boat was only a year old and purpose built for this tour and it was wonderful particularly in Gold class seats without the rabble (218 seats) and we only had 30 on our deck and a private luncheon. Perfect.
So a great day was definitely had by us both. Heading off to Tarraleah tomorrow , middle of the state near Lake St Clair, not sure of reception but we will be back on whenever.
love xx
