Alex lost in India-plus skips, blind leading blind
Hey Guys,
Firstly jr don't know what you're talking about I am so much better behaved than that. And as for will and ben, feck off! I accept you for being rude, obnoxious and sometimes downright egotistic so you can dam well accept my spako spelling. Bothers you that much i'll send you my journal entries first and you can spell check!! Anyway... been a quiet few days really. Properally getting in to the relaxed (apart from the roads) attitude to life here. Been on a few more slum clinics and on friday we had a health camp in a local village. These clinics never cease to stun me. There's some pretty harsh practices still going on here especially in the rural areas. Kids get branded on their skin with a white hot rod where they have medical complaints!! Saw a 4 year old with a branded chest on friday. Also they have a rather unsavoury tradition of putting cow manure on cuts and the umbilical cord. Nice!! But I'm still amazed at how welcoming everyone is. The health clinic was fun, when we got there we got cake always a good start! then the nurses sang a blessing song on the health clinic before a village cheif opened it. Was pretty amazing! Most of the kids had only seen white people on TV so I was pretty popular. Lots of dermatological complaints, left feeling very itchy!!
Saturday had wander(!!) round the local park, with the odd spot of eve-teasing (thats what they call it) from lads. At least they are a little nicer than some of the t***s back home! Went to some museums and art galleries (a little hampered by yet another powercut- better to have whilst looking at pictures than putting in chest drain, discovered use for touch on phone!!) then went over to ISKCON temple. Very bizarre and quite stunning place. Queue up similar to a ride at alton towers! They were highly suspicious of my camara, think they thought I was some sort of neobritish terrorist! and then a long path in. Some very pretty, very gold! statues of deities and paintings inside. Was very spiritual on a kind of mass basis. Was nice to observe people so open and imbracing their believes and religion. Never realised there was quite so much Hare Kishna merchandice, from car stickers to clocks! I have had quite a few people trying to save my soul since I arrived! I've had sermons (on ways to clinics) been sprayed with holy water and had some dam good arguements! All part of the fun. Anyway lovely food round at Kaydens on Sunday, sardine and green mango curry, a little hestitant at first but dam good and home made dosas! Kind of like pancake with spices and potato curry in middle, bloody lovely! Yesterday nice 14 hour shift! Lots to see and do though! Going shopping on thursday with the girls to get a salma-keenez (I think that's what it's called- tradional indian dress) will provide photos for amuzment once me and this camara get over few teething problems!! As will the other photos be up. Anyway was determined not to keep brief just to spite will and ben so hope you didn't get too bored! Take care everyone- xxx
