WHERE VIV'S AT...
Hi everyone.
Had a great time back in Perth - it actually felt like going home and I was so glad to catch up with Linds and Purd again. Did not really get up to much sightseeing just the inside of bars really (which was what I kind of expected as I've already seen most of what Perth has to offer). On Friday I met Linds and Nat and her fella Justin and we went to see a pretty good bad at the Rosemount called Augie March who reminded me a bit of Elbow (if you can remember that far back in time). Then Saturday I should have met Linds for lunch but she was a bit worse for wear after Friday (yep hangover) so we met later that night for quite a civilised drinking session in Cottlesloe. Then Sunday was the session down at my fav bar - Little Creatures where Purd fell in love with 10 week old Great Dane called Echo (this pub is very dog friendly - they even have big dog cushions for all the furry customers). Then Monday caught the Di Vinci Code in the afternoon followed by more drinks and Pizza with Linds and Co in the evening when I said bye to them once again (but girls you know I'll be back).
Oh and I stayed at a great hostel there this time round called Gov Robinsons (another of Ms James's tips so ta Helen).
So yesterday I made my way up to Broome in the north of Western Oz. Just to give you some idea of the distance between here and Perth, it was a 2.5 hour flight so it's like going to Southern Spain from the UK. Broome is a seaside town and most famous for sunset camel rides on the beach and it's also the gateway to The Kimberleys. And the weather here is great - in the low 30s. I'm staying at a hostel called Kimberley Klub and sad to say I'm booked for 4 nights - big mistake I think. It's like being on a club 18-30 holiday (I've never seen so many kids in one place). Also it's a bit strict here. You can't bring in your own booze as they have a very expensive bar they'd rather you spend your money in (but I'm going to smuggle in some wine as not prepared to pay $6 a glass) and also you can't bring fish in here either (god only knows why) and you get your own little bag of cups, plates and cutlery. Actually it's just like a prison. That said it does have a great swimming pool with sunloungers and lots of cool chill-out areas (so a posh prision then).
So why Broome. Well the main reason is that I'm overlanding from here to Darwin via the Kimberleys, and to give you an idea of the kind of journey I've got to look forward to, this area stretches a massive 423,000 sq km and has fewer people per sq km than almost anywhere else but more flies than you've probably ever seen in 1 sq metre. It's going to be the real outback for me and I'm doing it in style - well kind of... 4 wheel driving with tents over 9 days and just two opportunities to have a shower and use normal toilets. Oh Joy but what an adventure.
Well must go now to find a supermarket that does not sell any fishy products that I'll be tempted to purchase (or I'll get put in the cooler for bringing it back here). Then, I think I'm going to head for the famous Cable Beach and try to avoid being trod on (or worse) by a camel.
I'll put a quick update here just before I hit the desert. But for now, take care everyone.
