WHERE VIV'S AT...
So just a quickie to let you all know that I'm surviving the outback heat and pesky mozzies here in Broome (only 10 bites so far for me but I've seen people covered in them). Got more used to the hostel now and actually it's pretty chilled there and full of Aussies all looking for jobs on the Pearl Boats where I've been told you can earn a ton of dollars.
Broome is an odd place really. The heat is pretty unbearable now and as you walk around all you see is "locals" asleep under trees with their bottles of beer tucked tightly under their arms, and it's winter here so god knows what it's like in summer. The town is really tiny with absolutely no character and all the shops are just tin huts, and the centre is called Chinatown though I have no idea why as I've only seen one chinese restaurant and no chinese. So why then do people come here then in their droves? I mean it's completely booked out everywhere as people who have to move from my hostel today are moaning that they can't get any accomo. Well obviously the pearl industry and all the money you can earn 'if' you can get a job but really it's for the absolutely beautiful Cable Beach - 22ks of fantastic sand, crystal clear waters and magnificant sunsets - no sharks that I've heard of and at this time of the year, no stingers either - it's bliss.
But, today's the last day of beach for me for a while as very early tomorrow (bloody 6am!) I start my tour up to Darwin. We're following the Gibb River Road through the Kimberleys and it's 9 days of camping in the outback, 9 days of avoiding crocs and spiders and snakes and mozzies of course, and 9 days of having a fun time with the flies and having no facilities like a flushing loo or a cold shower. I think it's going to be pretty tough going but to be honest I'm really looking forward to going - it's my real Oz adventure.
Anyway I doubt if they'll have internet en-route so I'll probably sign on again when I get to Darwin - that's if the crocs, spiders or snakes have not got to me first.
