March 30 - Brook - Today was an individual vocational day. I spent it with Christina, a parish nurse working for Procare. As a parish nurse Christina is responsible for health promotion and screening programs in 14 different churches all over Auckland. Many are in very low socio-economic area and have mainly South Pacific parishners. She focuses on health teaching around diet, exercise, and health lifestyles.
After this Katie, Brenda and myself met together to take a generous rotarian up on his offer to take us sailing. What we didn't realize was that the boat was actually in a casual Friday afternoon race, called a Rum Race. You can guess what the prize is..... a bottle of Rum! We had a great time and had quite a nice lesson on sailing. We tacked back and fourth across the harbour at about 8 knots, rounded two markers on the starboard side the raced back to the finish line. We played the very important role of acting as extra ballast and running back and fourth across the boat with each change of direction when tacking ( I forget what the technical name is for this all ready ). We also tried very hard not to get in the way! ; )
The best part was no one got sea sick!
