It was an early morning, with breakfast at 7am and the bus leaving at 8am but felt amazingly fresh after a good nights sleep. We were heading north to the beach for 2 nights which was bliss.
Zanzibar is different compared to Kenya, still very green etc but it's totally flat. It still has the same degree of poverty even though it's more touristy! It's famous for the spices the island produces but they don't export any of the products.
We stopped at a spice farm which was really interesting but very dubby as there had been a lot of rain last night. We had to guess the spices by smell and taste before our guide would explain. There was everything from nutmeg, ginger, vanilla pods, pepper, cinnamon and cumin, it was really good! They also farmed fruits there and there was a massive variety from pineapple to custard apple, we then got a lunch of fresh fruit which was really refreshing and watched a local climb a coconut tree, which is a talent in its own.
The drive to Nungwi took a couple of hours, it wasn't a very smooth journey! When driving into the beach resorts it honestly looked like we were staying next to a rubbish dump but the place we eventually stopped at was quite nice - still basic but very clean.
The sand was pure white and the sea a gorgeous turquoise blue, very picturesque. Sam and I shared a room again and we had the afternoon to ourselves before meeting for a group meal in the evening. I spent the afternoon at the beach and swimming in the sea, it was an overcast day but the tan is coming along nicely :) There was a fair crowd of us down at the beach and ended up playing frisbee in the sea as that's where you weren't hassled by locals to buy stuff. It was a lovely afternoon, then a few of us had drinks on the balcony above the beach before getting ready for dinner!
At this point in the trip there was 27 of us all together plus Greg our guide and Chris the driver so you could imagine we needed a huge table! They took us to this pub/restaurant further along the beach and they set out our table on the beach. Greg and Chris recommended the local menu so I went for Calamari and coconut milk with rice!! It was so good and crazily cheap, after a few beers I headed to bed early, a tad tipsy :)
