We got up and boarded the truck ready to cross the border into Peru. We were travelling to Puno another place on the edge of Lake Titicaca. We arrived by lunchtime and todays activity involved another boat trip!! This time to see the Uros floating islands, islands made out of reeds. We got bicycle taxis similar to tuk tuks down to the water front where we had a quick lunch before getting onto the boat. This time the pier leading to the boats was a proper concrete one so there wasnt much chance of us falling in again. We boarded the boat and the tour guide told us lots of interesting information about the lake as we took the half an hour journey to the island. For example Titicaca means Puma Rock. As we got closer we could see the islands, they were yellow in colour it looked like everything was made out of hay. We docked on one island and were shown to a semi circle of reed bales to sit on. The guide introduced us to the chief of the island and he showed us how they make the islands. The tie blocks of mud together that has reed roots in for the base. They then go and collect reeds from the lake and cover the base with the reeds all in one direction. A week later they do the same thing again but put the reeds on in the opposite direction. They do this many times until the island is a couple of meters deep. The island was very soft to walk on, it moved under your feet. They then explained how they made the houses out of the reeds and the boats. After that we had a look inside a house on the island. It was quite small there was only a bed inside which took up half the room and lots of clothes and jewelery. We tried the clothes on, so we were dressed in bright coloured skirts with waistcoats and bowler hats. We looked quite funny. They then took us for a ride in the boat they had made out of reeds.
We then made our way back to the Hotel. That evening we went out and I had Alpaca skewers they were really nice. We were only in Puno for one night and heading off to Cusco the next day.
