We left the beach camp and headed further down the beach to see the cape seal colony. There were thousands of seals sitting on the rocks and swimming in the sea. There was a walkway we could walk along and the seals could walk under it so we were really close to them. They also really smelt of fish!! After almost half an hour we went back to the truck to drive further. We stopped again to look at a boat stuck just off the shore, the area is known as the skeleton coast because it has loads of shipwrecks. This boat had only been there a year so was still quite intact. Once again we carried on our way and arrived in Swakopmund, a German town in the middle of the desert. Wayne had not been feeling well and Ben had toothache so they were wanting to go to the medical centre, Aly thought I should go to get my foot checked out as although my bite was getting better it was taking ages. So I went along with them. It was the most expensive doctors visit ive ever had, makes you grateful for the NHS. It was 47 pounds to see the doctor and then 39 pounds for the tablets and cream he gave me. Apparently my bites had turned into ulsers/boils. Also the tablets he gave me were HUGE!! About an inch long and really fat. Poor Wayne who saw the doctor before me had to be sent to hospital as his malaria tablets had given him an irregular heartbeat, which the doctor told me all about whilst looking at my foot. Obviously there is no patient confidentiality here! That evening we all went out for a group meal at a vary nice Italian restaurant close to the hostel.
The next day me and Sarah just wondered around Swakopmund looking in all the shops and sampled some of the cake in the cafes. We did this pretty much everyday we were there as we didnt feel like going quad biking or sand boarding as we wanted to save those activites for somewhere else. We enjoyed meals out everynight and enjoyed being at the seaside.
We was supposed to leave on the Saturday but as Wayne hadnt got his results yet we stayed another night to wait for him. His results meant he had to stay in hospital a bit longer so we had to leave Wayne behind and set off without him. We headed back out into the desert, stopping at the campsite where we should have stayed the night before for lunch which was apple pie as it is supposed to be the best for miles around, it was very nice but would have been better with custard. We carried on to the next campsite and put our tents up. We then left Aly cooking our dinner as Mugo drove us to Dune 45. We were to climb up Dune 45 to watch the sun set. The dune looked a bit like a pyramid but with only two sides. We had to walk up the ridge that wound round to make a S-shape. Walking on sand is quite hard but it wasnt too much hard work. However I only made it to the first bend as my foot was hurting a bit. I had trainers on to keep sand from getting in my wound and they were rubbing against it, everyone else went bare foot. I wasnt the only one who didnt make it to the top so it wasnt too bad. We still had a really good view of the sunset as we were really high up. Then coming down was obviously a lot easier and a lot more fun than going up.
The next day we drove to Fish River Canyon, it is the 2nd biggest canyon in the world. Once again we were going to walk around it at sunset but it was really cloudy and looked like it was going to rain at any moment so Aly decided we would go at sunrise instead. So at 5am we got up, I say got up as we had been awake for ages as the wind kept making the tent flap and kept us awake. It was still really cold but we got out of the truck and had our pictures taken at 5am next to the canyon looking freezing cold. It was still cloudy so we didnt see the sunrise either. Then we drove a bit further along and Mugo stopped the truck for us to get out again, so we did. Then he drove us further and stopped for us to get out again, it was really nice of him to take us to all the viewing spots but we were a bit too cold to be bothered but we politely got out and took a final photo before he drove us back to camp for breakfast.
We had breakfast and set off in the truck again this time heading for South Africa, our final border crossing.
