We left Salta hoping we would be able to make it to Chile as the border kept opening and closing due to snow. However not looking forward to two nights in a tent in the snow!! We set off early in the morning and began our accent into the mountains. On the way we passed a famous seven coloured mountain and we saw our first Llamas. However when we got to the border about 7 hours later we found that it had closed again so we had to turn around and think of plan B. The guides Tony and Claire we were really good at coming up with plan B. We drove back another 6 hours and stopped in a small town called Kállepurca which was still in Argentina. It was quite late so we had dinner in a little restaurant and then all went to bed after a tiring day on the truck. For dinner we had Llama stew, so after seeing our first Llamas that day we were then eating them. They were quite nice, tasted similar to goat.
The next morning we arrived in Bolivia and stayed in a town called Tupiza. Tony and Claire went off to find us some activities to do the next day while we all settled into our rooms. That night we went out for Bolivian steak which was not as nice as the Argentinan steak but still ok and to hear the plan for the next day. The plan was to do a triathlon. First was jeep tours into the canyons, second was horse riding and third was mountain biking down a mountain.
The next day we got up and got ready for our trip. We got into the jeeps and began our tour. Bolivia looks like something out of a cowboy film, rocky mountains, cactus´everywhere, hot and sunny. we took some pictures of the scenery and were allowed to walk around a little bit before getting back in the jeep. We went to a very nice spot for a picnic lunch before the horse riding began.
Once again I had the slow horse that likes to be at the back. I must look like I need a slow one!! I dont mind this at all though, im quite happy to plod along at the back. We rode through the outback like proper cowboys, Yeeha!
After the horse riding was the mountain biking. We drove up this never ending mountain in the jeeps, twisting and turning upwards. A very bumpy dirt track that had no barrier to the cliff edge that was at the side of it. Up and up the jeep kept going. Eventually it stopped, but it was a long way down a very steep mountain edge! We paired up to bikes the best we could, I had one of the smallest ones as I like to be able to touch the floor. One girl Cheryl couldnt find one small enough so got in the truck not wanting to do it. I set off down the scary path with my hand on the break the whole time. It was very bumpy and it really hurt my hands, squeezing the brake and the jolts of the rocks on the way down. When it started to become not as steep I decided to give up and go in the truck as my hands were aching. Cheryl then tried my bike and decided it would be ok for her so she rode the rest of the way down. I did the really steep bit at the top of the mountain so I dont mind that I didnt do the flat bit at the bottom.
It was a really nice day out but tiring. We all slept really well that night. The next day we tried to go to where Butch Cassidy was shot but unfortunatly it was too far away and after 2hours we had to turn back. We did see some stunning scenery on the way though and had our picture taken on the truck roof. In the afternoon we set off for Uyuni.
