Got a shuttle bus from the airport but it dropped us off too far away from the hotel to walk with heavy rucksacks, so flagged a taxi down to get to the hotel, you'd be pleased to know my taxi flagging hasn't waned! Our hotel was smack right in the middle of Chinatown. It was by far the worst hotel we had stayed in on our whole travels to-date. No window, felt very claustraphobic...suffice it to say we didn't spend too much time in it!
Over the next few days we travelled on every public transport you can think of within the city! We'd already taken a short taxi ride to the hotel, the Tuk Tuk was quite scary but such good fun...tip: haggle hard as they all charge differently...the river boat taxis...easy to get around on and a very welcome breeze from the humidity of the city...public bus...the back canal taxis the locals use...very fast and very cheap although quite dangerous if you as clumsy as me...I almost fell into the canal whilst getting in!
We went up the Baiyoke Sky Hotel, the tallest hotel in Thailand...we went up to the 84th floor and the views of the city all lit up at night were fantastic, a must if you are visiting the city. We had time for Cabbages and Condoms restaurant as recommended by Mr Oviatt, thanks Chris, a lovely meal. We braved it and had dinner one night in Chinatown at one of the street vendors...after my food poisening incident I was a little nervous but got to say we both agreed it was the tastiest duck soup we've ever had.
It was so very hot and humid, the air conditioning a welcome haven in a local cafe or restaurant.
It was temples, temples and more temples...as you can see from the pics, some of the places we visited were spectacular...especially the Reclining Buddha at Wat Po and the Grand Palace, the pictures don't do it justice.
We ventured to Pat Pong area which I have now nicknamed 'PingPong Alley', had to witness it for ourselves, but we'll leave it there for the stories until I return! I recomment you sit in a bar off the street and watch the amazing world go by, so many sights, the more obvious ones being lady boys, George was thinking all the women were at the end of it!
We met up with Tom on our last evening in the city and his buddy Dave which was good fun...ended up in Cabbages and Condoms restaurant again then on for drinks at a local bar! it was good to catch up with Tom and his 'travelling tales'...thanks Tom you always make us chuckle!
We both enjoyed the city but were really pleased to be leaving the 'fugitive motel'!
Next stop...flight to Siem Reap Cambodia...
