Hong Kong Population 7M Province: Hong Kong Special Admin Region Location: Situated on the Pearl River Delta
If you're interested: previously HK belonged to Guangdong Province in the north. After the Opium War in 1842, it was ceded to Great Britain as a colony. Upon HK's return to China on 1st July 1997, HK became a Special Administrative Region (SAR). It is now a financial, trading and business centre...and a shopper's paradise! It is divided into 3 main regions: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.
We arrived at the hotel in Chinatown, Kowloon after lunch, after catching the metro from the border...another stamp in the passport!
As soon as we arrived we all went out shopping! I bought a new well deserved camera, 10megapixels no excuses now for taking shody pictures, so excited couldn't wait to use it! We all went out for our last meal together and Huang took us to a local restaurant in Temple Street market. The food was tasty the beer cheap but I reckon I would have walked on past had i not been with Huang. A real locals hangout. We all got Huang to go round the table and drink with each one of us, as happened when we went to the local wedding in Emei Shan. I think he was quite touched by it all, you can see the pics on the photo album.
Next day we all decided to go to Disneyworld...I was so excited, never been to DW before! It only opened September 2005...great fun, have posted a few pics on the album...nice day for us all to finish on as a group, although officially our tour ended the evening before!
George and I went to Victoria Peak the next day, we got the local ferry across to HK Island...think it only cost about 30p! Then walked through the business district to get the cable car up to Vic Peak...we were lucky with the weather as we could see the city, again pics on the album. I was quite surprised at how commercialised it was at the peak...shops everywhere. That evening George and I met up with John, Hannah, Tom and Graham on an evening harbour cruise the 'symphony of lights' laser show...all you can drink...bonus...great fun...then went onto Hard Rock Cafe for dins...don't ever ask George about the 10c bill underpayment!! After that we all headed back to J&H's room at the YMCA, they had managed to wangle a superb room with huge window overlooking the harbour, great views! We said our goodbyes and promised to meet up at some later stage in Sydney.
