Today we returned to where we left off. The rain last night had turned a lot of the ground to swamp but it was still easy enough to access the ruins. The weather was a little cooler today and the cloud was out so the heat was not so much of a problem. It was still humid as all hell though.
We walked around the three sections of the palace area then decided to walk past the souvenir sellers to see if they had a small souvenir for our collection. Big mistake. About a dozen women came rushing at us selling t-shirts, books etc. so we fled and found our tuk-tuk driver who took us on to Ta Prohm, the jungle temple which is a temple that had been over-run by the jungle and had trees growing through and on top of the ruins.
This place was without doubt the most crowded sight we had visited. The road here was just mud and there were hordes of children and adults selling any number of useless novelties. The standout being the $1 guide book for Angkor which when you press is actually one book for $11! Cheeky b******s! Inside it was worse, so many tour groups bogging the place up with group photos in front of every building or tree. The temple was well worth the visit despite this.
We then headed back into town for lunch after stopping along the way to take some photos of a group of monkeys on the side of the road then went back to the hotel for a rest.
Tonight we went out to Wat Thmei just north of the town centre. This place was once a Chinese school until the Khmer Rouge came to power in the 70's and it was used as a prison where many people were executed. It is now a Buddhist temple and has small spire (stupa) filled with the bones and skulls of the bodies they found here after the Khmer Rouge were driven out. They also had a traditional dance and music display as well as many monks working in what we assume was the adjoining cemetery clearing weeds. We then went to dinner in town before returning to the hotel for the night.
