We had breakfast at the hotel (not the best breakfast) after being woken at 5am by the power being shut off. The power came back on and we turned the air conditioning back on and fell back to sleep. We were awoken at 7am by another neighbouring property doing some construction work to realise the air conditioning had not been turned back on at all. The room was humid as hell and just as hot. We decided to get up as there was no hope of getting back to sleep.
We called reception so they could arrange our tuk-tuk driver to pick us up to take us out to the temples. Our first stop was the official ticket office to buy a 3 day pass to the temple complex. It cost USD40.00 each and we had to have our photo taken to appear on the ticket. We didn't think it was possible to have a photo taken that is crappier than a driver’s license photo but we were wrong.
We then drove on to Angkor Wat, the largest temple complex in the world. We no sooner stepped out of the tuk-tuk when we were approached by someone offering to be our guide through the temple complex. We told him we’d think about it while we took some photos then decided to take him up on the offer. He showed us around and told us the history of the place and other facts which made it worthwhile. He also took us around a way different to most people which gave some nice views of the temple. There were quite a few people there but nowhere near as many as we thought there would be. The weather was incredibly hot and humid, even the locals were sweating.
Our next stop was Angkor Thom which was the fortified city near Angkor Wat. We started at the south gate and then went to the Bayon which was a large complex with lots of places to explore. It also had no breeze and was suffocating. We then moved on to Royal Palace section of the city which has three sections. By the time we got here we were melting so we had a quick look then decided we’d return in the morning and have a swim back at the hotel to cool down.
We got back to the hotel and went down to the pool, it was quite cold but we waded in. I decided I didn’t want to go in as there were algae on parts of the bottom of the pool and I hate swimming in dirty pools. S didn’t care and got in for a swim. She kept asking me to have a swim but I declined with an explanation, eventually S decided to get out and agreed with pool was dirty. We rested in the room then went out for dinner in town. That night we got some rain for the first time, it poured for about an hour.
