So what can I say....major sick all night....coughing and hacking up stuff I did not know existed...Shauna is still ok. She had a bit of a fever but she survived.
So cruising down the Nile is pretty cool even if you are a bit sick. This ship/boat/whatever is sweet. You don't even know you are moving unless you look out the window, or are on the upper deck...she gets windy up there. The ship sailed late.....heh heh not sure but we think it was because of us.....in our defence they never gave us a boarding card.....so they must have counted the cards a thousand time and always came up 2 short (when you get off the ship you get a card, when you get on the ship you give it back)....we got a call in our suite "Ummm Mr Yamkovy, just checking...are you on the boat, and what about your wife?" simple response..."Why yes, yes we are, cough cough hack hack sniff sniff hack cough" "thank you!"....click....not sure but about 10 seconds after we hung up.....we was sailing down the Nile.....coincidence me thinks not!
So a 6:00 am rise.....had a quick breaky (the food on the ship/boat/whatever) is amazing by the way, I can't describe how well the staff treats you. Every time I sat down a special tea of some sort was delivered...hibiscus, herb, mint, honey, lemon, unreal....me thinks it must of worked because that and a combo of about 50 freakin pills which I am still not sure what they all did.....and amazingly the fever broke and I felt better. I have knicknamed the Staff Manager on the Whatever/Ship/Boat "Doc", he thinks it is an honor to be part of the medical profession now.
Didn't really matter though as I was touring sick or not again Shauna is ok so far.
Mohammed (our guide who is traveling on the Boat/Ship/Whatever was so worried about me.....the Egyptian people we have met so far are so nice and they genuinely give a crap about you!
Enough of that.....we haven't even got to the cool stuff.
Cruised at night woke up opened the window and we was at Kom Obo...right there.....5 minute walk.....
This is where having a guide is sweet....imagine 10,000 sushi loving tourist wanting to go to one place all at once, which is exactly what they do....sucks huh. With Mohammed on the job he weaved us around the confusion and took us to the places that they weren't. Then we actually got to learn about the purpose of the temple and what the hieroglyphics meant.
Amazing temple...... check out the pics...
So then we finished up there and got back to our cruise down the Nile, we got on the ship (I settled on ship cause its easier to type) and we put the petal to the metal to get to the next temple on the way Edfu. We trucked along pretty good, passed ½ dozen other cruisers on the way, did I mention there are 300 of these ships zipping up and down the Nile all the time.....big bucks.
Have to say....is pretty cool to sit back and watch the landscape go by. So we made it to Edfu without any problems and I managed to get a bit of sleep on the way also, so I felt a bit better, again Shauna is fine!
Oh I forgot to mention that the security here is huge. No fear. There are guards everywhere. All because of the tourist massacre in 1997. Every temple has metal detectors and a very strict protocol to follow., hidden guards everywhere (all armed also). Ask anyone of the locals and they say the fundamentalists are nuts.
Funny story....you can barely drive near the American Embassy in Cairo. Security everywhere blocked of lanes etc etc. Canada and the Russian Embassy have 1 guard in front of each...that's it and the Canadian Guard even waved "Hi" when we drove by. At the hotel in Cairo every time we drove into the hotel (next to the American embassy) the car got sniffed by dogs and they check the trunk and everything. Couldn't just walk into the hotel....metal detectors and bag checks....every time you enter....bizarre.
Side tracked....sorry....back to Edfu......
These guys can park these ships on a dime. Captain Stubing hit's the brakes.....parallel parks it in like 5 minutes....gang plank is out and we are off. Get up the bank of the river and teams of horse drawn carriages are waiting for us. We get in one and next thing we are racing thru the streets of a wild looking Nubian village at the mercy of a very young Nubian carriage driver. Our horse was doing some serious clip clopping we even went thru a couple of intersections....lets just say I closed my eyes. Cool to see an actual village like that everybody was shopping at the local market....no Wallmarts here! Then in a few minutes we arrived at Edfu....
WOW.....
Not sure what else to say...Massive....Ancient....reeked of history!
See pics......
On the way out I got a towel to wrap my head.......one of the locals even rewrapped it on my head.....he didn't like the way the guy I bought it from wrapped me head apparently....oh it cost me $20 LE for the fashion adjustment....just wanted to fit in....Shauna said I looked sexy....kinda in a Lawrence of Arabia way.......
After another race thru the streets we successfully made it back to the ship. High Tea followed by supper...ahhhhhhh
Feeling better, nose really running though....Shauna is fine! Have to say...no point in drinking if ya feel like crap going into the bar....herbal teas for me.....
Next night cruise to Luxor.......
