The sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation centre rescues orphanned Orang Utans and rehabilitates them so that they can live in the wild or at least be semi wild living at the reserve. Towards the end of their Rehab the orangs are free inside the reserve but extra food is provided twice a day on platforms, these feeds are the only bit that tourists are allowed to see. So after seeing Orangs in the wild we won't expecting too much from the day, it was actually pretty cool because you get quite close to the platform and get a good view of them all. It only lasts half an hour though before they disspear in the jungle again, chased away by the macaques.!Tom wasn't pleased to see them!!! LOL (you'll understand when you read the blog about the kinabatangan :)
The best bit of the day really wasn't supposed to happen at all. Three of the orang utans escaped from the jungle and caused havoc aroud the cafeteria area. They was hardly any tourists around so we had them all to ourselves, it was amasing seeing them so close, fooling around and playing. To be honest it was difficult not to get too close. They were very interrested in us and kept walking closer. Hard not to cuddle the little things......
Once the three escapees had been taken back into the jungle by a keepers, we went on a short jungle walk. We were horrified tthough when we discovered loads of leeches on the leaves ready for us. Tom could not believe how horrid they are, wriggling and stretching as you walk past to grab on to you...We never actually got to the end of the walk because we were so slow trying to avoid all the leeches! I'm pleased no one was there to see us walking arms wrapped around our bodies with horrified looks and desperatly trying to avoid touching anything around us! We did manage to get out of there without bringing any of them home though :) phew
