We didn't do a blog entry for Kuala Lumpur, mainly because i (tom) was abit ill again. But it was a very cool city, not what we expected at all and nothing like Bangkok. Kuala Lumpur was very modern, easy to get around, and had lots of interesting things to see and areas to visit. Not that we manage to visit many of them being so ill! But hey we're going to be going back there after Borneo, so we'll get the chance to explore then. We stayed in the Backpackers Trevllers Inn in China Town, had lots of easy going people to meet but only very simple rooms. The best bit being the rooftop bar, which had some good views of sky scrapers. We were only there a couple of days though before we left for our flight to the LCC (Low cost Carrier) terminal of Kuala Lumpurs airport.
Arriving into Sabah, Borneo and the city of Kota Kinabalu. Still very hot and humid, so lugging round a backpack is the last thing you need! We got a taxi into the city centre and got ourselves booked into a hotel, well a place called Lucy's Homestay, which was very nice and cosy, and Lucy was very helpfull with travel advice. We also got some laundry done there, proper laundry with a machine and everything! Was nice to have fully clean clothes for the first time in over a month!
We mostly spent our time there exploring the city and its many malls!. I (tom) bought myself a guitar (10 pounds for a very nice one) so Kims back to learning and im back to twanging away any quieter moments! Probably the best thing about Kota Kinabalu (cos it wasn't that great) were the markets. The had an awesome fish market in the evening which we tried to get pictures of but they didn't turn out so good and every sunday they have a massive market that spans the length of the city. Some of the things being sold were abit horrible though, kittens, dogs and rabbits (often all in the same cages) in boiling weather with no water, and piles of terrapins all on top of each other. They also had some huge soft shelled river turtles, which were very interesting to see, but i don't think i'd want to eat one! Kim wasn't too impressed to say the least!
At the moment, we're a little south of Kota Kinabalu next to a beach, we needed to escape after spending so long in big cities and after this, possibly tomorrow, we're headed north, back up past Kota Kinabalu to the mostly northerly point of Sabah, and Borneo. Should be interesting.
Love
Tom and Kim
