Well, we've just arrived in Sandakan on the east coast of Sabah, after spending the last four days freezing our bums off at altitude in Kinabalu National Park. Was quite the shock actually being cold (well at night at least) after nearly two months of heat and humidity!
The park itself was amazing. Kinabalu Mountain itself was most impressive and BIG, apparently its half the height of Everest... The jungle was really cool, pretty much as you'd imagine it to be, very noisy with birds and insects calling (aswell as massive insects landing on me all the time *shudders* (Tom that is, kim loves them insects!) We trekked long and hard! Managing to cover all the lowland treks the park has to offer in just over two days.
The wildlife we managed to see in that short period was pretty impressive too. We saw an absolutely huge flying squirrel, it looked more like a flying Labrador or something! it was about three feet long, not including the tail. We also momentarily saw a jungle/mountain deer before it paniced and ran off into the jungle. We saw some carnivorous Piture Plants growing in the wild, Kinabalu Mountain is famous for its many species of Piture plants. AND finally we saw a Kinabalu Litter Skink (lizard). As you can imagine us being reptile geeks we were pretty chuffed!
Thats about it for now, on Monday we head off to Semporna, a little to the south, which is the jumping off point to the Sipidan Islands where we're stand our best chance (fingers crossed) of snorkelling with Turtles, thats the hope anyways!
