Welcome!
me: Well, moving within Letaba proved to be futile. The bat boxes placed randomly throught the rest camp village were too pervasive no matter where we slept. So! We have moved back to Skakuza for this reason and more practicle ones as well...howz my spelleeng? ANyway....
Steve's translation: the bat boxes STANK! There were fewer fruiting trees for research purposes and the trees at Skakuza are in fruit and in reach. On our last evening in Letaba we walked as far away from the bat boxes as possible and I noticed fruit bats at 4:25 pm (daylight hours) feeding on sycamorus fruit!! Much to my colleague's (Christina's) great delight. The bats plucked fruit and flew to a branch within the same tree then consumed the fruit. All books indicate that this never happens! And this has been a bone of contention between my colleague and I (me, Christina being right!- yeah!) I, Steve, have had to back track and admit, incredibly as this may seem, that I was mislead (not wrong). Seriously interesting behaviour and very much a part of our research, so exciting stuff. Christina - Except for the 'stuff' that comes out the other end of our cute little fury stinky bats eating fruit.
Christina:
We went into 'town' and had lunch at a traditional Portugues resturant. Portugues?? Why yes, you see Mozambique borders near the southern end of Kruger. There was really tasty shrimp and calamari and many cervesas. Our bellies are still full. A special treat to interupt our typical Marmite (vegamite like) sandwhiches everyday - I know, boo hoo and all that. I have to secretly admit that I am becoming partial to Marmite.
Steve's translation: Marmite is thick black stuff, basically a cow that has been hung by its hind legs and dripped into a bottle. Sounds delicious.
Christina: second thought, no more Marmite.....
Steve: Yeah right! It's actually VERY English and very good.
Christina: Isn't that an oxymoron...English and Good?
Steve:I am resigned to trudging on...
Christina: TTFN, miss you all. Hi Dad if you finally make it to the site! xoxo
