Wills and James Road Trip
Day Twenty-five 8.4.05
Slept in this morning and missed breakfast which was included in our room price. We did however manage to negotiate some pastries, orange juice and coffee in the bar. (complimentary of course!)
Not too much driving was the plan for the day and Santiago de Compostela was a reasonable distance. The guide books advise that this is the third-holiest site in Christendom, after Jerusalem and Rome because pilgrims come to visit the supposed shrine of St James the Apostle (Santiago to the Spanish) We have been following the Camino de Santiago or Way of St James for quite a while without fully appreciating the significance of the route.
Our ignorance to these sort of things is great, but our intention was not to plan a structured route around Europe knowing what to expect but to happen upon these things on a journey of discovery, that way these things are a bonus and we are learning as we go. That our excuse anyway.
We have found a lovely campsite in woods about 2km from the city centre. We can hear loads of birds singing and we have pitched in dappled sunshine. William is enjoying poking a stick in a blocked drain so all in all we have a winner. We will chill out this afternoon whilst the nice old lady at reception does our washing and walk into town tomorrow.
