Wills and James Road Trip
Day Thirty-two 15.4.05
William's Birthday
This morning we took an open top bus tour of the city to get our bearings. It did the job and although it rained a bit and we had to go downstairs it was well worth spending an hour and a half in traffic to view the sights.
We spent until lunch time walking the streets and ally's of Bairro Alto, this part of the city is really atmospheric and not too touristy. We took a ride on the Gloria Funicular to get up there and then another ride on another funicular tram down again. We had lunch at a famous Art Nouveau café called A Brasileira which has a fabulous interior, but because the weather was being kind we decided to sit out. Unfortunately we were rudely accosted by a begger, and the worst of it was he was English! He was so horrible it shook us a bit. We guess its to be expected in a capital city.
In the afternoon we headed for the Alfama area which is also where the Castelo de Sao Jorge is situated. Its quite a tiring city as there are so many hills. We made it to the castle which rewarded us with fantastic views of the city and even a camera obscura from which we were able to view the whole city in realtime on a projected image. This was amazing the device was apparently invented by Leonardo De Vinci!
We have come back for a siesta as we plan to go to a nice restaurant tonight and then clubbing.
