Wills and James Road Trip
Day Three 17.03.05
Got up rather late this morning, I guess we are both beginning to feel more relaxed. James went and had a shower as it was less effort than a separate toilet visit. On his return found the van empty and William and his jogging trainers were nowhere to be found!
James decided to put all the bedding away and tidy up the wendy house. It is a bit like playing in a wendy house, its certainly small enough!
Had a lovely breakfast, although French bread is better on the day of purchase. We decided to have a lazy day and hang around the campsite. About 20 minutes later we set off! James decided that it was about time he had a go at driving, this was particularly sensible as we didn't plan to go far which suited James' driving skills and William's navigation skills.
We were less than a mile (sorry kilometre) down the road when we found Memorial Pegasus Museum. This was a fascinating insight into the Normandy landings and all the brave souls who helped Ranville become the first town to be liberated from German occupation. The rest as they say is history.
All this learning made us feel hungry again so a visit to the Champion supermarket was required for our newly planned picnic. The weather was lovely and sunny but the wind a little chilly as you might expect of Northern France in March. The picnic was had in the van with views over The Channel.
Unfortunately the car park was for vehicles with a maximum height of 2 metres. James was sure that he had read that the van was 1.8m tall. Either the overhanging bar was set too low or the height of the van was without the pop up roof! Any how, as William says, not many people look at the top of the roof. The damage is not too bad and can easily be repaired. We have decided not to trust height restriction poles in the future and avoid any thing but lorry parks. (To James' delight!)
We took a short stroll up the beach and found a Tourist Information Office. The sign on the door said it would reopen at 3pm what we didn't see was that this is on every 3rd Tuesday, if it was sunny and if the tourist officer could be bothered. Back in the van to the next town, although it was difficult to tell that we had left the last town and entered the next the one giveaway was yet another tourist office. This was however 'overt'. We browsed for a while to see what else Normandy could offer us whilst the tourist officer chatted enthusiastically in French with her pals who happened to be visiting. She must have seen William looking confused as she offered help in rapid French. William was 'okay' apparently and rather than leave us alone she decided to help us (in French) which ultimately resulted in James returning to the van to get 5 Euros to buy a map which we had probably picked up for free at the previous museum. It was worth it though to see William nodding in agreement whilst she pointed at yet another D-Day leaflet.
Then back to the campsite for a bit of sunbathing and then more food! The diet will have to start when we leave France!
