So leaving Darwin we stopped by at Litchfield Park, it was the weekend and very packed. We went to florence falls where you can swim in the plunge pull which we happily did. It was really pretty and although it was packed could still have a little bit of a splash about. There were some nutters who kept climbung up to the top of the falls and jumping off into the pool below! So we spent quite some time there before going to look at some magnetic termite mounds which were cracking!?! We then drove for ages down to Katherine again and were so so hot, we went to another caravan park and the owners said that it was the hottest day they had had that year. We had to jump in the pool to cool down, the caravan park wasnt that nice the bogs were full of everything from the insect kingdom. A lizard watched me go to the loo which was nice for it. The next day we went down to Katherine gorge, we got up super early to try and get a canoe but were really annoyed to find out the canoes were booked out all day to tour groups bahhhh! We did a little walk instead and then felt the need to get back on the road again, we drove for a little while and went pass a place called Mattaranka, on the sign post it said Thermal pool...we went and investigated and found a gorgous little natural pool with turqoise water. We went straight in and enjoyed wallowing about in this lovely pool. There was a really nutty woman in there who kept talking to us about how rich she was and how she and 'Nicole' (Kidman) are freinds, Kam was especially worried about this lady as she kept floating up to him a bit too close for comfort! Then a nutty man got in and he just kept saying f*ck yeh!! to everything we said he said he was trying to get to Adelaide as quick as possible and that he was going to have a bottle of cider before he drove off again...bless him
That night we stayed at Daly waters roadhouse which was really nice, it was super cheap and had the cleanest bogs you could wish for, we had a beer and watched massive road trains come in and fill up. The next day we had another long drive to Tennants Creek....the reason we have to travel so far everyday is that there is absoloutly NOTHING in between these roadhouses or little towns apart from bush and dead kangaroos! Tennants creek was just like a street with a few shops and houses on, we stayed the night in another caravan park. We didnt feel that comfortable doing the free camps down this stretch between Darwin and Alice as the rest areas are right next to the road and really exposed, we feel more safer in the parks. So the night in tennants creek was ok, we found a bar that had happy hour (always good) and cos we hadnt eaten much it was a cheap night hehehe!
So we didnt have that long a journey the next day as we were going to the Devils Marbles which are bright red boulders balanced in wierd ways. We had a good wander round and took some pics before driving a few Kms south to a place called Wycliffe Well. Now Wycliffe Well may be one of the strangest places we have been so far. As we approached there were signs saying CAUTION UFO LANDING SITE AHEAD....ok!? Apparantly Wycliffe is the UFO capital of Oz. In reality its a petrol station with a carvan park out the back and its decorated in loads of alien/UFO pics! We decided we had to spend the night there, at first we were the only people there and it did feel a bit wierd. Inside the roadhouse there was a chinese resturant (for the aliens!?) and loads of newspaper clippings of UFO sitings around wycliffe. There was also a really odd shrine to a stuffed toy monkey!?! Outside there were big plastic models of the Incredible hulk and Elvis!! Me and kam soon got bored and wondered what on earth we were going to do for the rest of the day, Kam amused himself talking to a parrot and then we found our Hooters had yet another ant invasion so at least that gave us something to do! Soon a few more people pulled in for the night including 3 english girls next to us so at least we had company! We thought we would have a few cans of VB to celebrate being in such a strange place, I think we had too much and we spent the night eating chinese with the english girls giggling. About 3 in the morning way after we had gone to bed we were awoken by this noise of like a helicopter. We looked out the window and couldnt see anything, we thougnt it was a road train approaching but nothing turned up. This noise was really spooky as we just couldnt figure out what it was!? UFO maybe!
So we left Wycliffe really early the next morning and drove all the way to Alice Springs, it was nice being in a sort of busy place again. We had a few days looking around and we spent one day at the West McDonnel Ranges where we did some bushwalking and looked at Simpsons Gap and stanlys chasm which were quite awesome cliffs of red rock and we were happy to see a little rock wallaby who was sunbathing! It was really strange in the caravan park we stayed in we met some people we were parked opposite in Broome! So we had a nice evening chatting to them. We went up Anzac Hill in Alice to get a view over the town and its quite small place!!
So next we head for Ulluru!!!!
