Well we had to tear ourselves away from lovely Broome, say goodbye to those marching Camels and leave the cable beach sunset behind us. It was back on the open road and we had a long run to Katherine.
We had decided to go to Derby but at the last minute decided against it as all it had to offer was the second highest tide fall in the Southern Hemesphere, so we scooted around the turn off and headed for our free camp spot. We settled there and noticed another van pull in, containing two british travellers who seemed a bit wacky and we felt a bit intimidated talking to them at first. Then a Lady pulled in and she looked just like Benny Hill and as she left I made a comment about her and this broke the ice. We were offered beer, tobacoo and tea, it felt as if it was chrimbo!!! We then played scrabble and had a chat until we all were really tired and retired to bed!!!!
Next morning we awoke to skipping and panting, we thought there was a lively kangaroo outside but it was the british couple doing their excerises. We headed off towards the Bungle Bungles National Park and past through tiny towns, which all felt a bit backwards. We were really making headway and the amount of times we had to fill up with petrol showed the distances we were doing. We were desperate for some fruit and veg after eating too much pasta and tinned crap but couldnt find hardly any in the little places we passed through! We arrived at the turn off for the Bungle Bungles and were a bit peeved that the track down to them was unsealed and not recommended for little Hooters. So we just chilled out under a tree! The next day we set off again, the road was in really bad condition and at some places it went into single track to go over narrow bridges...we prayed there wasnt a road train coming the other way! We were now approaching the Northern Territory border and came into a pretty little place called Kunnunura, as a treat we thought we would have some sausages and salad, we went into IGA supermarket and thought it had a really bad smell in there, but we bought our stuff anyway and then just before the NT border we turned down this road to Lake Argyle which is a manmade lake. It was really pretty and out of the lake were big red rocks. We found a picnic spot and cooked up those sausages, our mouths were watering at the thought of proper food. To our disgust everything we had bought from IGA tasted of the bad smell in the shop and it was gross and we both felt a bit sick and dissapointed :-(
So after our sick picnic we drove through the border into Northern Territory where we had to change our watches one and a half hours forward which instantly played havoc with our bodyclocks! We free camped again in this pretty rest area, we noticed how the weather was a lot more humid now and we had a bucket shower to cool down. The next day we headed towards Katherine, another long journey and just as we were about to choose the next free camp area on the map we both felt the need for some comforts so chose to stay at a caravan park at Katherine. As soon as we got there we went straight into the swimming pool, and appreciated it very much! We were so grubby and hot we needed a good shower! We decided not to spend to much time in Katherine as we were going to pass through it again on the way down south after Darwin. So the next day we were off again for another long drive to Darwin, which we felt could be achieved in a good 3 hour run. We passed through alot of hills and dust but could see the landscape changing as soon as we passed through Adelaide River. We were going to do Kakadu National Park but felt it was too humid and were warned against the flys!!! So we make it to Civilisation, and head for our caravan park in the Palmeston Area about 25 mins from Darwin CBD. We ask at the reception where the nearest KFC is and she tells us the way, our mouths are now watering at the thought of that hand made burger, with that chickeny smell wafting out. We queue at the drive through and head back to the caravan park with our treats. The Colonel never dissapoints, and felt we were ready to try out the the swimming pool. It was heaven, 2 spas, 2 swimming pools and a waterfall. We both swum around like seals, and Ellie even made a Seal noise, but I think that was her juices in her stomach approving of KFC.
Next day we went into Darwin and it was really tiny, all the main businesses seemed to be on the main drag into it. We looked around for a while and went on the internet. We then went to The Mindil Night market and decided to have a drink on the beach before hand. The market was really pretty and had a whole array of clothes, jewellery and copious amounts of food stalls. Ellie got a cheese Naan and we sat on the beach watching the sun go down. We the saw a really groovey band which was a man on a multi digeredoo and another man on drums. They were a Drum and Bass duo and got the crowd rocking, whilst in the background we could see a man with a whip showing off.
Next day was a maintanace day, check the fridge, change Hooters Spark Plugs and do a Food shop and for dinner a large pizza from Dominos for $5, eat my shorts. Darwin was strange in the fact it was so small, but offered all the amenities you could ask for. It had a great vibe about it and felt very Australian.
