Arrived in Melbourne at 7am this morning, bus ride went quick even though I felt I got hardly any sleep at all! Couldn't check into the YHA Metro until 12noon so we put our luggage in some lockers and went into the city for a gander. First impressions of Melbourne are that it's very chilled out, kind of reminds me of an old Western town for some reason. So much quieter and laid back than Sydney! Really nice though. We went for breakfast at a little cafe where I had the most amazing poached eggs on toast ever.
Afterwards we went to the Old Melbourne Gaol where Ned Kelly was hanged. Was a really interesting tour, was in there about 3.5 hours. Went and looked round all the cells and this guy told us lots of interesting facts. There was also a Ned Kelly story told through the eyes of his mother Ellen which was really good, the woman who acted out the monologue was excellent. We also went and found out what it was like to be locked up, they turned the lights out and everything!
On Friday we went up the Melbourne Observation Tower which was really good, not as good as the Empire State like, and we were abit naughter and told them to make it higher in the comments book haha. In the afternoon we went to Fitzroy Gardens where Captain Cook's cottage is and we just chilled out there, I got my face burnt so I looked like a tomato for a good few days which was nice.
On Saturday we were up nice and early for the Neighbours tour, first stop was the actual street, which is really called Pin Oak Court. Is really bizarre as it's just a normal suburban street. It's really small in real life, only about 5 houses in the cul-de-sac, but they change all the house numbers to in the 20s so it makes it look bigger! They also don't film inside the houses, all the interior shots are done on a set about 5 minutes away, where Lassiter's and Charlie's Bar etc are, that was really small too. Was ace to say I've been there after so many years of watching it!
On Saturday night we had a trip to Phillip Island where the penguin parade is. They were awesome to see. The penguins are only about 12 inches big and the mum and dad penguins go out hunting for food in the sea during the day and then when it gets dark they all come back to the burrows to throw up the food and feed their families. Was comical to see all the little penguins running up the beach, they looked like they were trying to knock each other over! Got a couple of sneaky pics too even though you weren't supposed to as the flash hurts their eyes.
Got back to the hostel at about 12.30am and we had to check out by 10am the next day. We took our luggage straight to the station and then headed out to St Kilda for the day. Had a lovely few hours there, had a browse round an arts and crafts fayre that was on at the beach front, and then we had a walk down the pier. Was lovely weather and it reminded me of a typical British sea side town (just the weather was hotter!) After that we went back to the station for our coach journey to Colbinabbin.....
