The Tahune Air Walk is a forestry-run venture, a PR exercise though a very costly one! It consists of lovely walks through the surrounding area including one to a grove of Huon Pine. The air walk itself is about 500m of steel walkway through the forest canopy ending in a cantilevered section stretching out high over the Huon River. It shakes and shivers in the breeze which is a bit disconcerting but it's an interesting experience. We walked back to the car the long way following a track that crossed the Huon and its tributary the Picton with swinging bridges.
Rather than head to the highway we continued through the State Forests on roads that had probably not seen much traffic for months. One track had us engaging 4WD on a very rocky steep ascent. But no dramas with the roads at all.
When we finally came back to the highway we found the turnoff to Southport Lagoon where we knew there was a campsite. Signs warned it was a medium level 4WD track for high clearance vehicles only. Sounded good to us…
We aired down and started on the winding, rocky and muddy descent. The 6km track took us an hour to negotiate, so not exactly a quick trip. At the end, just back from the lagoon, were campsites with fireplaces. The lagoon itself is a conservation area and is lovely. We collected 18 huge Pacific oysters lying there in the most pristine waters in the world just begging us to take them. They will never beat a good (or even mediocre) Sydney Rock oyster but they were very tasty with a bit of lemon juice and even nicer cooked in the half shell over the campfire.
