Today is the halfway point, our 21st day in Tasmania so three weeks down and three to go. Having gone as far south as possible yesterday and recovered from the walk - just - we moseyed north again, weaving on and off the small back roads off the highway, doubling the distance we are travelling in the process.
In Geeveson, we checked out the Forestry Centre, another forestry PR centre but well done and with a marvellous collection of old machinery, all hand or foot driven - lathes, drills, saws, routers and so on. Some were based around old treadle Singer sewing machine bases - ingeniously re-manufactured to do a job.
Franklin is famous for its wooden boat building centre and we had a tour around the workshop where some students were building a beautiful little dingy from Huon Pine. There were some other stunningly beautiful craft in the workshop as well as moored outside on the river. Russ was captivated and would dearly love to do a course here building one- well maybe one day. Franklin also hosts a little cider house and a small purchase was made there…
We followed the eastern bank of the Huon River estuary north to Huonville where we turned south again following the river until it turned east then north again with Bruny Island stretching itself off the coast.
So no walking today - enough has been done lately to last a little while! We settled into a Council provided campsite right on the D'Entrecasteaux Channel with a glorious sunset chasing the rain and the clouds away.
