We had tried to text a message to John and Heather, our managers at a property in Port Douglas and who had become friends. They left Port Douglas a while ago and we had lost touch, though we knew they lived near Launceston. John now admits to being hopeless with mobiles and texts, so never got our message. However we discovered we had the home number and Heather answered. So a date for afternoon tea was set.
In the meantime we parked the truck in town and walked around the (very small) CBD and over to the most amazing place to have right in a city - Cataract Gorge. This gorge whose river empties into the Tamar Estuary was recognised over a century ago and dedicated to the citizens of the town way back. So here on the doorstep of Lonnie is a fantastic walk right along the steep-sided gorge, past the navigable part and on to where wild water tumbles over rocks. Some serious tracks go much further but the end for most walkers is at a lovely picnic area with tea houses, a bandstand, a swimming pool, a suspension bridge, a chairlift and some rambling echidnas.
It was lovely to see John and Heather at Rosevears. Their beautiful property is in the process of being sold and is one of the loveliest we have ever seen with its view over the vineyard to the Tamar and its superb garden and delightful house. They will miss it I am sure but they are coming to Sydney and it will be lovely to see them more often than once in ten years!!
