We were invited in to our hosts' home for the most amazing breakfast spread, mainly local Sri Lankan food. Far too much for us to eat, but we were urged to take some away with us for lunch - such wonderful hospitality.
Stuffed to the gills, we took our luggage down the steep slope to meet our jeep at the bottom and at 08.30am we were off for our journey to the hill station town of Ella. Eventually we started climbing up and up, around 100's of hairpin bends and feeling the chill in the air. We were rewarded with fantastic views and surrounded by the lush greenery of tea plantations everywhere. We stopped at Damro Tea Plantation where we had a tour of the factory, we practiced plucking the leaves, and finished off with a nice cuppa and a piece of cake - how very British.
We continued our journey and arrived late afternoon to our guest house overlooking "Ella Gap" and cannot explain how beautiful that view was - all day, every day for the next 3 nights. We had a large balcony complete with hammock and enjoyed a few G & T's soaking in the view.
Ella was a very chilled / hippie type of town and had a great atmosphere - more so than anywhere else yet on our trip. Being 1000 metres in the mountains there was no humidity and therefore much easier to sleep at night and no a/c needed. Our first evening was spent at Café Chill where we enjoyed cocktails, great food and "vibe"- we were out out!
The next day we decided to climb up Little Adam's Peak which again rewarded us with fantastic views and also a zip line for Dan and Louis. At the top there were multiple platforms, rocks and viewpoints which made for great photos.
We then continued our walk to the Nine Arch Bridge by walking along the railway tracks and that bridge certainly has a wow factor. The curved arches span over a steep gorge at 30 metres high and was somewhat scary when Dan and Louis decided to sit on the edge with their feet dangling, especially when the edge was sloped downwards. The bridge was built by the British commissioned in 1941.
Dan and Louis continued their walk along the tracks in to Ella, whilst Kim and Heather got a tuk tuk back and were relaxed drinking cocktails when the boys strolled in to town. After a bite to eat we went back to our hotel and enjoyed a swim with our beautiful, picturesque outlook of Ella Gap.
Our final day was pure relaxation and we spent the day by the pool - nothing else to say about that. We went back to Café Chill for our final meal and had a few drinks along the "strip" and it was time to say goodbye to Ella.
