Arrived Udaipur in the state of Rajasthan after 1 hr 10 min flight and went straight to the prepaid taxi desk for a taxi to the hotel which took about 30-40 minutes. Lots of traffic intermingled with the sacred cows which share the roads equally. Nice small hotel (Mahendra Prakash Palace Haveli) with pool and aircon. We walked through the tightly winding streets of the old city where people were very nicely trying to sell us their wares, "looking is free". However, we did end up in Little Armani clothes shop and we promised to go back the next day to look at made to measure shirt and trousers for Dan. The guy pointed us in the direction of a rooftop restaurant where we had a beer in a coffee mug as not licensed and shared a plate of Pakoras. "Blackie" managed to sell us a trip in his jeep for INR1500 (£15) which we agreed to do on 5th July. Walked back home and went to bed tired.
4th July - up and breakfast and walked to the City Palace which wasn't far from our hotel. Very interesting and some lovely views over lake Pichola. Afterwards we found Little Armani and Dan got himself fitted for a shirt and a pair of trousers. Walked back to the hotel and went in to another shop where I bought a pair of trousers and two tops and Dan got persuaded to buy another handmade shirt. Went back to the hotel to relax and get cool and in the evening we got a tuk-tuk to the other side of the lake and had dinner in the roof top restaurant, Upre. Great views to the other side with the palace lit up in the distance. Walked back over the bridge and walked down to Gangaur Ghat where the locals were sitting on the steps of the lake, chatting, playing a guitar etc along with a few sacred cows thrown in (not in the lake).
5th July - Went to Blackie's restaurant for 9.00am and went on a jeep tour in to the Aravalli hills to see some temples and great views. Visit to Tiger lake and then to a local restaurant for a Thali - £5.00 for 3 of us, cheapest meal yet. We then walked through the interesting vegetable and spice market, picked up Dan's shirt/trousers and went back to the hotel for an afternoon swim. That evening we went to Poonam Haveli recommended by the hotel and sat on their rooftop restaurant - fabulous views but we were the only ones there. Food was quite good too.
Our days were spent relaxing and mainly taking advantage of the roof tops, chatting to the few other tourists around who are generally doing a similar route or coming the other way. Udaipur was a good introduction to Rajasthan and we are excited to see what is next ..........
