Yesterday was the Salakapat Festval where everyone in the village gives money and offerings to the Monks and the Temple. We went up to the Temple at 9am with the whole school. When we arrived we all went into the Temple, gave the offerings to the head Monk and prayed to him and Buddha. The prayer was very long! And obviously didn't understand any of it apart from having to do the 'Y-prayer action' then bend and touch the floor with both hands, 3 times in a row at the beginning and at the end. Wun then took us and introduced us to the Head man of the village. We were told that villagers were to put more money on the offerings if they earnt more money, some of them were incredible! One looked like a Peacock with a 500 around its neck and 20s and 100s making the feathers it looked class! The Traditional Thai dancing then began, with the girls from our school going first. They looked so cute in pink traditional Thai dress and extremely long fingernails (fake of course). We were allowed to stay for a few more performances from different villages, they all varied, the Karan hill tribe came and performed - they were class as they didn't have boring music just loud drums and they were jumping about with bells on their outfits. The children loved that one - apparently they had never seen that type of dance before, or even the drums. We then had to go back to school and carry on with the day.
Back at school we didn't teach till after lunch (which was lush) but one of the teachers had to go to Chiang Mai so we were left to cover Patom 2. They were well behaved and worked for 45 mins but then became restless and didn't listen! So Wun said to take them out and play games with them, the first game they taught us a more violent version of duck duck goose which involved a ball and throwing it at the 'goose'. It was good fun! We seemed to gain a few extra classes too! I may have got a bit competitive as per usual but so did they children! We also played volleyball and basket ball (which was literally throwing a ball into a basket) but the kids loved playing with us, they were actually saying our names and not "YOU YOU". The girls also did not leave me and Emma alone they kept holding on to us. At one point we had about 3 on each arm. 2 hours past and it was home time.
We got invited to a special thank you party that was going on in Thaton School, as students from West Island School, Hong Kong had been completing building work in a few schools around the area. We got picked up and taken to the school, there was a stage and matting in the playing field, filled with candle light and strobe lights dotted around. The ceremony started and the children spoke such good English! They gave the school representatives presents and had a show full of Thai dancing and singing - it was so good with one young ladyboy (like 15 years old) in the centre stage of all the dancing was funny!! After food and a good bop the schools set of lanterns and fireworks went off to! It was such a nice evening and very nice to get out of the house and do something! We got a lift home with a principle of a near by school. We have been in so many random cars its nuts! Haha but luckily we didn't have to get into the pack of the pick up - we got given first class treatment and got to ride in the cabin! Having a great time and the children are starting to enjoy having us here too!!
