So I land in Singapore get a whole new stamp in my passport (woo hoo) and get straight on the train to the city and there is people everywhere. Like everywhere. It is a complete culture shock after a month in Cambodia. I feel traumatised. So from the train station on route to my hostel I see a Maccas! So of course after a good few weeks in Cambodia I need one instantly so in I go with my backpack and get myself a cheeseburger meal woo hoo. It is amazing and also so cheap and of course Singapore is gonna be pricey!
Of course I get lost a million times on the way to my hostel, there is annoying road works everywhere so I struggle to follow my map as you can't quite figure out what street I'm on, it's so hot and sticky and my bag is so heavy now, and I am full up from my Macca's. But I finally find my way. I check in and oh yes I have a bottom bunk I am so happy!! I love not having to spend my time climbing up bunk beds in the dark. There is 2 canny Aussie blokes in my dorm and 2 scary lesbians who do not speak to anyone and hate the world. The room does also stink of foist and sweat. Oh well you can't have it all, we do have a balcony facing out on our street. I am staying in little India it's such a cool area.
That night I head to a Indian Restaurant across from my hostel which claims to do the world's best Biryani. They have no mutton left which is their speciality so I have chicken, it doesn't come with the curry sauce but it is seriously so good I am so happy with it. I haven't had decent indian cusine since curry club in Margs last summer so it is just wow. They guy who runs it is lovely too and we have a nice chat. That day I am also interviewed on the street by this sweet little school girl who asks me a series of questions regarding how Indian, Little India actually is. I say very due to the style of shops, the music and the restaurants.
During the day I head to Orchard Road which is like their Northumberland St for the Geordies out there. But way fancy haha. Basically nothing like the toon. They have H&M there. OMG I haven't seen a H&M since last year when I was in Malaysia so I am buzzing to get inside one and look and touch all the clothes that I can afford!! It actually isn't amazing in there but I do find a lovely pink shark jumper that I buy later on. I also find a Factorie which is an Aussie store its cool and I get a well cheap going out top from there. Bargain! They also have New Look. I think New Look is s***. I think after living in Oz I have realised its bad value for money the quality is crap and just not that good. I am now a Cotton On girl for life and H&M of course!! This is all inside a shopping Mall on Orchard Street so I head outside on to the main street which has Marks & Spencers which Is what excites me but they have all the big names, Louis Vuitton, Versarce and Cartier. You get the picture yes? If not please see my Facebook photos for further details…
So anyways after my trip and my Worlds Best Biriyani I tried to get the boys and some new Dutch girls in my dorm to play out with me to Raffles for a Singapore Sling, however no one was playing ball so off I went solo for the worlds most famous cocktail. I must admit I was quite dissapointed by the small building I found the bar in, it's like maybe a 4 level building. I was expecting a huge skyrise I think. I went inside and it was an old school vintage bar for sure, a lot of dark wood. It was pretty cool, obviously I went for the Original Singapore Sling (I have no idea what is in this but it was delicious) It cost me $31 Singaporean Dollars after the tax was added on which is maybe 15quid I think. Of course I am not socially backwards and I end up sitting at the at the bar next to a fellow Solo British Backpacker called Laura. She has been touring the Indochina route (China, Malayasia, Thailand, etc) and was about to head over to Australia for a month. So we had plenty to talk about and hit it off very well. We decided we would attempt to meet up tomorrow after my exciting breakfast plans. And we headed off back to our hostels.
The next day was Zoo time for my Breakfast with the Orangutans, so I was up mega early, showered and headed for the train to the correct stop and I then had to wait for the bus to the Zoo for aaages. Like about 30 mins which really pissed me off as I did not want to be late for my date! When it finally arrived about a milion people who looked suspiciously like people going to work not the zoo got on it. I then realised this was no Zoo express bus it was basically the s***ist bus ever that stopped everywhere and anywhere dropping people off on their way to work. I couldn't figure out where I was meant to get off, I was on this bus for so long I was convinced I was going to be late even though I actually left my hostel 2 hours before breakfast time. I finally arrived anyways. I went to pay at the enterance where I thought I just needed to pay $30 for my breakfast but I actually had to pay $60 entry as well which they do not advertise on the website, maybe its obvious to some but it sounded like you didn't need to actually do the zoo to have breakfast but nevermind I wasn't giving up after that marathon journey. So $90 down I ran to the restaurant via some scary white tigers that seemed highly on edge for some reason.
I get in the restaurant and the lady who checks me in is super cute almost American like. I end up at my prime view seat and I hit the buffet like a starving fat man!! There was real bread and actual butter and of course all the standard items; bacon, eggs and of course hash browns which are my favourite. They also had dim sum which was a cute touch. Of course I just stuck to the traditional fat food. They also had apple juice. Like you might be reading this thinking oh wow wtf? But when you travel you do not have access to asda at all times so these things are now luxury items in my life haha. It was basically the best breakfast ever!! And then the cute Orangutans came out. They are absolutely gorgeous about 10 came out for us which was so lush. There is mothers, babies the lot. The zoo has a free range area which is cool I think it's the only one in the world so they are just playing around way above your head all day in the trees they have their own little play stations up there. They come on down from some ropes so it's super cute. They are like teeny little humans I adore them. The babies are just so cute. The mothers are just constantly watching them like trying to help them and make sure they're ok for when they get stuck and they can't figure out where to climb next. I could literally watch them for hours!! We can then pose with them for photos yey! Of course we can't touch them as they are indeed wild animals. So basically you stand there smiling looking pretty and they play in the background. There was also a teeny white face monkey that appeared that did not appear to be like the demon monkeys I hate. And there was a sweet little snake that we could hold and pose with so I did that too! Gotta get your monies worth. Funnily enough the snake feels really creepy and I don't really like it even though it's tiny compared to the huge snake I held years ago when I was in Oz visiting my sis. Weird as this teeny fella couldn't hurt me for sure! This is a definite response to fear factor Australia I now have installed in my blood.
So after the best breakfast of my life basically I head on round the zoo having a wander, there is a lot of Steve Irwin references everywhere as he endorsed this zoo, so that's nice as I am obviously a huge Steve Irwin fan however it is certainly no Australia Zoo. It is a nice place but some of the animals seem really on edge and a bit traumatised and very zoo'd where they don't seem so happy. You can't see to many of the electric fences that keep the animals in so your pics look better but still I don't really love this zoo to be honest. I think however I would have preferred it more if I hadn't been spoilt in the best zoo ever in December! The Orangutans are definitely the best part in the whole place obviously for me! I am so happy when I see them little cuties. I do visit the white tiger again and he does just seem so unhappy and in distress its not nice to see and I feel I don't want to visit a zoo for a very long time. Animals need space and need freedom! I think it's a harsh situation to put wild animals in. Steve Irwin's Zoo is so good as the animals seem so happy as they do have so much space.
So after the zoo I head to Chinatown so I can visit their local Hawker Centre. This is basically a food court full of amazingly cheap and delicious food. It's like indoor street food. I spend a long time in there eying up all the tasty dishes I eventually settle of boiled chicken and rice it's about 1.50and it's absolutely beautiful. I really do love Singapore now I have got over the amount of people pushing me about its actually nice to be back in a proper cool city as there is so much culture and different stuff happening amongst the business dealings. Everywhere you go is completely different. Chinatown is awesome it's full of cool markets and stalls and also a beautiful Buddhist temple that I visit.
I then head to the harbour to see the cruise terminal, the cruise ships are absolutely massive it's crazy! There is a Jamie's Italian here and I so wanna go for food and a wine but I restrain myself as it's so pricey. I end up inside the Vivo Shopping Mall and discover a new H&M where I purchase my pink shark jumper and a black skull print mini skirt all for a bargain $25 (12.50quid) I was so proud of myself as that is pretty restrained for me as last year in KL I went mental in H&M but I'm more sensible now as I have a lot of things to carry haha. I really do miss shopping in H&M though you can always rely on it for a nice dress and a cute top.
So anyway I finally manage to get access to some WIFI and I manage to message Laura explaining I've had none all day, it turns out she's had the same issue all day too so we end up missing each other and she leaves tonight so we don't get to catch up again but of course there is always Facebook so I send her a list of 101 things to do in Oz! So anyways… I then head on to The Marina Bay Sands Hotel which is right on the waterfront, it has amazing city views. It's a huge shopping inside too obviously there is also a restaurant called Mozza there which I loved! This super mall is amazing and there is a gondola inside which unfortunately as I was not there with the love of my life (george clooney) I did not feel the need to get on and test them out. I do love this place, there is so much money here! Super rich place! It's a big contrast to Little India, where they don't particularly look poor but they certainly aren't rich, just your average Joe's… or Jamals!
So I wander around there and do not hit the casino even though I really want to as sometimes in life you just have to be strong! I head on back to the hostel to hang out before I head out again that night. My plan is to hit Ku De Ta which is the hottest/hippest/coolest bar and club in Singapore right now its based at the top of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. The two Aussies are up for playing out and drinking away already and we get the 2 dutch girls on board too. We hang out in the room listening to music and getting ready. the girls take forever to get ready one is already annoying me haha such a low tolerance to a*******s. They go out wearing the same dress for some weird reason. Me and the Aussies are like 'Really? You're going out wearing the same dress for real? Like in real life?... Ok?!' So after the drama of them getting ready and finally being ready we head out at 9.30. The boys are hammered as they have been drinking cheap nasty Indian rum all afternoon. I've not drank a thing since my super expensive Singapore Sling so I am desperate for a glass of white wine by now.
We finally arrive and queue to get to the bar of course as we are there so late it's now $38 entry as before 9pm its free. Annoying! Me and the boys give the girls very evil eyes. Me and the girls refuse to pay to get in as that's so expensive and we are backpackers. The boys pay anyway and we are told we can go to the restaurant bar for free anyways so we all get in the lift together to head on up. So it turns out the boys were given UV stamps on their wrists for their club entry so bring on the licking of the stamps and us all rubbing wrists together to see if we can get UV too. So we admire the view at the top in the restaurant which is amazing obviously we are so high up. We then head to the club, of course the stamps work hahaha amazing we are buzzing! I get me a $25 wine and we ask a guy to take a photo of us girls at the top for the view, we end up asking a Asian guy who happens to have the worlds biggest camera around his neck. He kinda laughs at us asking him to photograph us with our iPhones and he is like 'that's so not gonna work' so he does one with his camera which is of course the best photo we have ever seen! So we are super excited as it's so nice, he says he will send this to us that night via email. What a lovely guy. And of course later on at around 4am I receive an email from good old Kenny with our amazing photo on!! What a cool, awesome, lovely Singaporean! It is of course the photo for this blog!
So that night we drink wine, dance a lot, drop it like it's hot and chat up a lot of rich men in the hope of more free drinks. This is completely the coolest club I have ever been to its absolutely awesome. A quick chat with a rich man, and oh did you say Members Area? Hell yes I did! So off he takes us girls to get our very own UV members only stamps on our hands yey!! Awesome soo happy!! We are literally buzzing just sitting with the elite of Singapore, admiring the view. Lifestyle of a backpacker does not get much better than blagging your way into a members area that costs a small $18000 annual fee. Haha woo hoo!! But of course it turns out members area is a bit s***ty to be fair as we just wanna dance like its 1999 so we head back to the poor people section and dance our socks off! Of course we spend a good few times popping in and out of members area just because we can and of course we are also looking for David Beckham incase he's in the area.
On the way home we keep the standard up and end up in some VIP limo taxi where we have complimentary water and a TV showing a Victoria Secrets Fashion Show. And very loud music and lasers. Happy days indeed. I bloody love Singapore. I go to bed smiling my ass off and I have had 1 glass of wine all night what a good night out!! A perfect way to party in this town.
The next day before my flight I head out to the Bugis Mall on the hunt for Cotton On, its terrible which is a shame and its not cheap but nevermind at least I tried. I then head on to the train station with my bag full of my new purchases, I arrive in the airport and discover a M&M shop ooosh I love M&M! so I stock on some bags from there as I need them so much and I have a subway which is disgusting and I wish I had stuck to the lovely reliable Maccas. Dammit silly error Tracy. But nevermind I'm off to Indonesia baby so more on that in my next blog of course. Much love guys xxxxxxxxx
