I actually went into work at 7am so I could work a half-day. It was pretty hectic for me to get everything done that I needed to before I had to make the loooong drive home. Fortunately I'd packed everything the night before so when I got home I only had to pick up my suitcase and load it in the cab with everyone else. Out to the airport before 2pm, so we had a lot of time because we were worried about Zach. He'd had a flag up on his boarding pass and we weren't sure what for. It turned out to be that in parties of four+, they always single out someone for a bit of a search.
Had lunch at a Montana's or something in the airport. And even after that we had a bunch of time to kill, so we wandered around the airport. Haven't been there in the day for a long time. Especially not after all the renovations.
Zach tried on a few sunglasses that he really liked, (but WOW were they expensive) and I looked for some mechanical pencils because I had only brought one. It was actually a day where we needed sunglasses. Despite it being cold and snowy, it was really sunny. We were still really excited to get out of the cold weather.
Checked out the 'living wall' that they put up not that long ago. Lovely plants, and a lovely half-transparent bridge going past it. Much spiffier than I remember the Edmonton Airport being.
The flight to Vancouver was short, and unfortunately we didn't get to see any mountains. And of course, getting through customs for the US in Vancouver was brutal. HUGE long line with only a couple scanners open (and of course, the 'special people' got to skip the line and have a scanner to themselves). We stopped at the duty free on our quick jog to the terminal. Fantastic deals on booze. Got a couple things to bring down to drink in Hawaii.
But of all the luck, the headwinds over to Hawaii were extremely strong, so they told us there at the terminal that we wouldn't be flying straight to Hawaii like expected. We'd have to fly down to LA, then over to Hawaii. JUST lovely. An extra three hours stuck in a little plane that wasn't meant for long-journey comfort, plus we wouldn't be allowed to disembark in LA. Only bonus was we got a lovely view of LA at night as we flew in. The Staples Centre was all lit up. Pretty neat to see.
Movie system on the plane wasn't working either. So the whole flight down to LA, the hour plus waiting on the tarmac there, and then the more hours flying to Kona was boring as hell. I couldn't really do any drawing because of the cramped space and the low lighting. Luckily I had brought some books on my iPad to keep me occupied as Zach slept on my shoulder. It was a really painful flight.
Finally got into the airport at around 2 am. Thankfully the rental car office had stayed open late for all the passengers on the plane, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to get to our house. It was a shame that we arrived when it was so dark because Zach and I couldn't see much of the landscape - just dark shapes.
We had a bit of trouble finding the house - mostly because the drive up to the gate wasn't properly signed, but when we got in we were amazed - definitely a nice place. Sue and Dave greeted us with beautiful lei's when we finally arrived. We wanted to look around, but we were so exhausted that we had a drink of cold water and went to bed. (We're lucky - we got a King bed with a full ensuite!)
