Even though it meant we would have to backtrack in a few days we decided to visit Lake Bohinj, somewhere neither of us had visited before and supposedly very beautiful. A late start and an easy ride and we arrived late morning. We managed to check in to our apartment very early and headed off to shop for 2 days. With just a few items in our trolley we asked if they were open tomorrow (Sunday) - 'No we are closed', okay what time are you open until today - 'We are closed'. What do you mean you are closed? We close at 1.00pm, it was 1.00pm, so it wa a trolley dash to make certain we didn't go hungry at Lake Bohinj - not that easy when every label is in Slovenian. This place is heaving in the summer but it was so quiet here we went on a boat cruise in the afternoon and the 50 passenger capacity boat had 4 of us (plus 1 dog). Sunday we went for a potter up Mostnica gorge and only met a handful of tourists. The plan for Monday was to pedal back to Bled and onto Ljubljana (80km). Several online weather forecasts said rain all day but a couple said heavy snow! We enquired at the Tourist info after our walk thinking that they would know the most reliable forecast to look at. Certainly there will be NO Snow down here she said, high up on the mountains yes but not down in the valley. We woke early to heavy rain, so just resigned ourselves to a wet ride and didn't rush. At 8.00am rain turned to sleet then snow and it got heavier and heavier. We had already found out at the tourist office that there was a train station about 4 miles up the road. So we went into overdrive to make the 9.00am train to Ljubljana as the next one wasn't until 12.46pm. In less than 30 minutes the grass was almost white over and the raod wasn't looking good. After just 10 minutes of pedalling we were white over ourselves, couldn't see my map or satnav for snow. We gotta get out of here, we were getting very strange looks from car drivers and locals as we gingerly made our way along the white road. We didn't bother with photos we just wanted to get that train. If we missed the early train then got refused with Titty on the late train then we would be stuffed for getting to Ljubljana. We arrived at the station with 5 minutes to buy tickets, unload and get Titty and bags onboard. Titty only just went through the train doorway. With bags, bike and us on board the doors closed a minute later and we were off. Shortly after we were standing in a lake of melted snow. When this started running down the carriage annoyed passengers started moving bags from the floor to empty seats. Titty just about fitted across the width of the train between carriages. Even if we could have turned Titty to get her into a carriage the handlebars were wider than the doorway., Once the conductor had checked our tickets he had to climb over Titty to get into the next carriage! We had to change trains at Jesenice with just 8 minutes between trains, fortunately there were no stairs to tackle between platforms otherwise we wouldn't have made it. The second train had wider doors and room for bikes so we managed to take a seat and enjoy the view. Donna has been in touch with the Bohinj apartment owner who was pleased we got the train, if we left it much longer he reckoned we wouldn't have got out on Titty. We are 2 weeks behind our estimated schedule which would have been okay but the snow has arrived early and is forecast at Bohinj for the next 4 days. The cable car up to the Bohinj skiiing area is actually closed for 2 weeks of annual maintenance in readiness for the skiing season which is now here! We made it out of the mountains but we still need to get to the coast sooner rather than later.
