A ticket at Barkerville is actually valid for two days - that's because it's impossible to experience it all in one. Our second day started with a guided tour round town by one of the saloon owners, whereby we learnt a lot more of what went in tow including the 'Hurdy Gurdy Girls' - dancing girls that would do more than dance if the miners would part with enough gold. Donna was drawn to the bakery by someone eating a Cornish pasty, the price put her off though and we settled for an apple fritter and a jelly (jam) doughnut. We finally caught the stagecoach and took a ride up to the courthouse in Richfield. This was another boomtown but the gold played out here and the miners left. The court house is the only surviving building in Richfield and that's where the stagecoach dropped us. The case we heard was that of a man murdered on his way from Quesnel to Barkerville. We avoided being selected for the jury who at the end of the trial found the defendant guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. It was an easy journey back to Barkerville for us - on the stagecoach of course. We had missed the commotion of the town photograph being taken by Billy Barker but that was okay as we caught it yesterday (but forgot to mention it). We hiked up to the viewpoint so we could see all of Barkerville stretched out along Williams Creak. We took in some more buildings, miners cabins filled with dirty long johns, pickaxes and boots, boarding houses who had residents sleeping in 12 hour shifts (in line with mining shifts), the Chinese restaurant (actually serving yummy food) that lured Donna in and I lured her back out, the Doctors, the Dentists, the Barbers, the library, the Assay office and the Sentinel Newspaper office from which every edition printed still survives. The Chicken coop next to the Blacksmiths we found to be empty, the reason being a bear recently walked down the main street and showed a lot of interest in the chickens. They have temporarily been moved to somewhere safer. We missed out on the guided tours of China town & the Cemetery, The Theatre Royals 1950's show, the Cariboo Goldfields AGM, the confederation rally and more. There is so much to see here, in fact you can get in for a 3rd day for a small donation. We are so pleased we found out about this place, they bring the Gold Rush history back to life in a really interesting and light hearted way. We had an amazing time here. Today the weather was even better and ended with another camp fire and a BBQ of two tasty monster racks of ribs which we failed to finish.
