We were on our way to the historic town of Barkerville but needed groceries, gas and propane before heading down highway 26 as there is not much in the way of services down there. We stopped in Quesnel for gas (petrol) and filled up but the gas station didn't sell propane - they actually refill your cylinders in North America, you don't exchange. This is good news as you can get your cylinder filled up even if it's not yet empty. Saw a crackin Harley at the gas station custom converted into a trike. We then called into Walmart for groceries and a couple of Km later found a garage selling propane. With everything replenished we could have a leisurely drive to Barkerville - or so we thought. Tilly wouldn't start, we tried and tried but it wouldn't start. I checked the receipt to make sure I hadn't put diesel in instead of gasoline - no problem there. We called BCAA (British Columbia Automobile Association) for help, a tow truck came out, the driver gave us a boost but it still wouldn't start, it's not a dead battery. It was Saturday afternoon and we needed a garage for a repair. The BCAA guy phoned everywhere in town but no luck, all the mechanics had finished for the weekend - what on earth do we do now. The plan was to tow us to an RV park on the edge of town then tow us again Monday morning to a garage that could repair us on Monday. We had to wait for a second tow truck as the 1st one wasn't big enough to tow a truck and camper. For the first time we had made a reservation at an RV site - because Barkerville is so popular it could be full when we got there. The lady in the garage we were broken down at let me us their phone and I managed to change our booking. We were towed into Airport Inn Motel & RV - not somewhere we would have chosen to stay. Most of the campers here were being lived in and the place was rather decrepit. The site plan said showers take 2 Dollar tokens available at reception - so we had 4 - 2 for each night. Donna came back from the showers having put 2 tokens in and still no shower, she complained at reception and the guy told her ladies take loonies (1 Dollar coins) not tokens, tough luck he said no money back. It was only 4 Dollars lost but I was livid at the mans attitude. I went down and gave him a piece of my mind, I showed him the site map he gave us which just said showers - 2 Dollar tokens. He had given us an old site map not the new corrected one, reluctantly he gave us 4 dollars back. The weather was superb, we had a great barbeque and gained a lot of interest to the trailer residents seeing as we had been towed in. A couple of guys took a look to see if they could get it started but they reached the same conclusion as the BCAA guy that the fuel pump was broken. The one positive are that the BCAA guy and the two camper residents were amazed at how good the condition is of the truck and camper. They cheekily asked how much we had paid and said we did good (even though we are broken down). The other positive is everyone tells us that these Chevy Silverado's V6 5.3 litre are really reliable and the only thing that seems to go on them is he fuel pump at around 200,000km - well we are at 191,000 so it seems inevitable that it was going to fail soon. Once the pump is changed they all reckon our problems will be over. Sunday, we spent half the day cleaning the camper down from top to bottom and re-organizing inside. No barbeques Sunday it pissed down - dinner and Monopoly inside Tilly (Donna won again). We are currently sat inside Fountain Tire, Quesnel and yes, the fuel pump is broken and being replaced. It's gonna cost between 700 and 800 Canadian Dollars! Looking on the bright side (as Donna normally does) on Friday we drove 26 kms down a gravel road and back (with no mobile reception) and didn't breakdown and if we had broken down on route 26 to Barkerville where there is also no reception. Hitch hiking is illegal in BC and technically stopping to help someone broken down is also illegal and we are informed that most local people driving on highway 26 will not stop to help you - but they will stop, get your details and phone a tow truck company for you when they get a signal or access to a landline. So, let's be positive, we had stocked up with food before we broke down, had plenty of wine and beer and there were lots of repair garages around that would be open Monday morning. They say someone somewhere is always having a worse day than yourself, well on Saturday when we broke down, 2 guys got arrested at the repair garage we are at. They had stolen a vehicle that later broke down. They found the vehicle owners BCAA membership card in the glove box and phoned for a tow truck. The BCAA for some reason phoned the owner with a question and then learnt that the vehicle was stolen, they phoned the police who sent 2 officers to Fountain tire in readiness for the tow truck to arrive to arrest the 2 car thieves. Why on earth they didn't abandon the car and steal another one is a mystery. All being well we will be in Barkerville later today but we must top up the booze first!
