Death Road Bike Ride . . .
Named the most dangerous road in the world!! And after seeing it and riding down it, I think it's appropriately named!!
I'll just give you the facts first, for muns sake...19 people have died riding this road since 1998, 108 people died in a head on collision around a corner coming back from a football match a few years ago, a minibus went over the edge last year, and at least 2-3 people a month end up in hospital after the tour I did today!!
But.... It was amazing, such a great day!! Dad you would've loved it, and been so proud of me, I didn't freak out and I was standing doing proper downhill over poor gravel and loose rocks, which they call 'babies heads', and I was always in the front group with the speedy men :-D
This was a 6 hour downhill bike ride of 64km covering a decent of 3,600m, which we were informed is enough to complete a sky dive, and the scenery was unbelievable!! We began the ride at 4,700m above the clouds, the highest I have been yet!!
We stopped a couple of times for some snacks, regrouping and dodging traffic!! There were a few hairy moments when the best thing to do was crouch, let go if the brakes and hope for the best, there were also even scarier moments when the road edge, that's the cliff edge of a drop of over 1000m, but riding through the massive overhanging waterfall and the feeling of reaching the bottom and still being in one piece was immense!!
I would say I'd do it again tomorrow but I have a feeling I might be aching!!
Oh and to finish off the day we had a gorgeous hot shower and dinner in an animal sanctuary with parrots and monkeys!!
The pictures I'll put on here will not do the ride and road justice, but I've asked them to send the DVD home, so dad you'll have to upload a video when it arrives :-P
