I arrived in La Paz yesterday after another peculiar little journey! About an hour in, we had to cross Lake Titikaka, we had to get out of the bus and get a little speed boat over whilst the bus had to get its own ferry!!
La Paz is the highest city in the world and it sits in a bowl between the mountains and hill sides! Its cold!!
Today I went on a free city walking tour which was really good and well researched. We started outside the prison, where we were told that the inmates have to pay rent, as they may have been the only income before being imprisoned the rest of their family cannot afford to rent a place in the outside so they live in the prison too! The 200 kids all go to school opposite and get escorted there and back by police. Apparently it's like a mini town inside the prison so everyone can work to pay there rent. They could be renting a bunk in a 20 bed room, or a 2 bed apartment with private kitchen etc!! They also told us of the latest scam run by the prisoners, their outside crew would kidnap cars and when you report it to the police the prisoner gets your information and orders a ransom, if you don't pay they will harass you until you do! Follow your family etc. But on the plus side you get your car back completely untouched when you pay!!
Another interesting thing was at the which's market!! There was lots of dead foetuses, as it is regarded good luck here when building a new home, to bury a llama foetus. However, when building a large/grand building it is custom to bury two homeless alcoholics alive under the foundations, as a sacrifice and giving back to Mother Earth :-s hmmm!!
We then went on a search for a German baker who makes gluten-free bread and gives his profits to charity!! According to the Irish cafe owner in Copacabana, 'ask anyone, they will know him', well we found some gorgeous smelling bakeries but all laughed at me when I said no wheat!! We walked for miles, so we decided to get a local 'chicken' bus back to the hostel, it was an experience!! But we made it in one piece.
Now early night tonight, as I'm tackling 'The Death Road' tomorrow :-)
