Toms Intrepid Travels
As we headed south into Malaysia, the weather was certainly becoming a lot more tropical, as was the countryside, with us driving through spectacular rainforest mountain scenery to get to the island of Penang. Obviuosly for a place to be this lush and green, it was starting to rain a bit more regularly...and very heavily!
What you notice on Penang when yo arrive is how much more foreign influence there was here as opposed to the rest of Asia, such as large colonial british buildings. It is also quite a funky place with a big chinatown and little india, so plenty of variety! We did a variety of things over the two days we had here such as temple viewing (again), although they're still pretty impressive, city viewing from skyscrapers, naked ladyboy dancing (don't ask), rainforest canopy walking, and scaling the dizzy heights of Penang Hill, the highest point on the island! Not bad for two days.
Our next stop was the Cameron Highlands, a series of towns/villages built up in the rainforest hills.....where it is just like England! For example, it was cold (first time i had to wear jumper for a month), it was very wet (rained all the time), and all the cafe's serve cream tea and scones! Not that i was moaning about the last one. Here, we had a great day package that included climbing to the highest peak in the highlands (one of the rare clear moments luckily), jungle walking (v.muddy), tea plantation exploring, scone tasting, strawberry picking and eating (yum) and visting a huge butterfly farm (lots of creepy crawlies)! Again a full filled day.
By night though, there was the important matter of "Survival Sunday", the last day of the Premiership season! Of course they had a few games on live here, so we found our watering hole and settled down for the games. Well done West Brom!
