Tobes on the Go!
Hey all,
Well as you can guess, if i'm writing this postcard I have arrived safely in the UK. Damn it was a LONG flight! Anyway, I touched down at about 5.10am and we were at the terminal by 5.20am, so bang on time. There was a bit of a wait for Customs (they weren't too concerned about my declaring my insanity), I guess it couldn't have been too bad cos I was waiting for a city-bound train by 6am.
I made all my train connections fine and it was good to see something of the outskirts of London from the train before it went underground. When I did arrive at Clapham North station I thought great, I'll see Kirsty standing up on the street waiting for me... but, to no avail. What I did get was a 'slightly' under-the-weather Kabe on the phone giving me directions on how to get to Ferndale Road - admittedly, it's only just up around the corner really.
When I got to Kabe's digs (and very nice they are too) and relaxed for a bit - it was actually already starting to get warm, the girls (Kabe, Kate, Suze) headed off to work and I decided it was time to get ready and head out for the day.
So I went down to a greasy spoon called The Little Kitchen (I think it was stuck in the 1950s) and tucked into eggs, bacon, snags (they asked me what I meant!), toast and tea. All that for the princely sum of £4.25. After that experience, which I found very entertaining, I wandered down the Clapham High Street to get a bit of a feel for the area (so far, so good) and then into Victoria Station to get a Big Bus Tour. I can say this was well worth it - about 3 1/2 hours riding round on the top of a roofless double-decker bus seeing the sights of London. It is a huge city, I was amazed at the size of it. The really great thing is that now I have a better idea of the things I want to go back and see properly.
I have to get going now - Kabe is going to install broadband and I think I'm going to see her play Netball tonight and then head out for drinks with another Melbourne friend maybe...
Thanks for your entries, keep them up.
Toby.
