Sipping my first (of many) vodka tonics on the flight from Tokyo to Sydney I start to wonder how much I will take away with me from the last two months. So here it is, a compiled mish mash; what I'll miss, what I won't, what I'll hopefully remember.
Things I'll miss:
'Japlish' (Japanese English), e.g. Public signs like 'Please use a toilet finely' (in a toilet in Kyoto) and 'BABY s***TER. I take care of your children. Please call up me'.
Open-plan eateries - sitting at counters watching chefs opposite me prepare the most beautiful food with utter care and precision.
Green Tea everything, from Kit Kats to custard puffs to Frappacinos.
The politeness and consideration you receive from Japanese people, even strangers.
Delicious breakfasts of sticky rice, fish, egg, miso soup...keep you full til lunchtime!
Uber-cleanliness
Open-enthusiasm for sharing food with other diners, whether if you're eating at their table or not.
Free use of public toilets EVERYWHERE.
Generosity of people I'd only just met; I've been given ice lollies, expensive (unused!) underwear, mini-samurai helmets made from delicately folded coloured paper.
Taking in the absolute peace and quiet of a deserted traditional Japanese Garden.
Things I won't miss:
Piss-drenched public squat toilets in tourist areas. With no toilet paper. Or soap.
Stackable car parks. Another space-saving initiative of the Japanese; parking your car up on a shelf with the help of a big mechanical stacker. Just be sure you have everything you need before you send it up...
Waiting an age to cross the road / the 'No Jaywalking' law.
Sniffing instead of blowing your nose (apparently less annoying!)
The sneaky table charge added to your drinks bill when leaving a bar.
Matchbox-sized (but efficient) hotel rooms.
'Chipmunks sing the Beatles' (yes, you can buy the LP...)
Tokyo traffic. Hours of fun!
Getting lost in Tokyo's mind-boggling Shinjuku station. For the fifth time.
Drowning in plastic bags; unnecessary excess packaging for everything you buy.
Things I will never forget:
Karaoke with new friends (it really does bring people together!!!)
Spotting Mount Fuji from my airplane window / the aerial view of Japan's stunning jigsaw-piece archipelago.
Eerie silence of the 9th Century Okunoin Cemetary in mountain-top monastery town, Koya San.
The Cat Cafe - Bizarre after-work haven for the city dweller with limited living space; pay by the hour to stroke bored-looking felines.
The awful sadness of the Peace Memorial Park in the modern, upbeat city of Hiroshima.
Living like a Beatle when performing in schools; getting mauled by excitable teenagers post-show, screamed and waved at from classroom windows as we drive off.
Watching the steam rise from every crack in the pavement whilst staying in 'natural hot spring central' Beppu. Also, cooking (and burning) my dinner over the heat of the volcano (and smiling obligingly at the camera when my Japanese co-habitants took a photo of my pathetic efforts!)
Paying a flat fee of 15 quid for "all you can drink in 90 minutes". So much fun if you ignore the ugly consequences.
Being approached by hoards of Japanese school kids wanting to practice their English with you.
Waiting for the lift doors to close as the hotel receptionist performs a full 90 degree bow to me on the other side. Awkward... :)
