Dean and Claire's t'internet travel journal
Hello from Koh Samui,
We are enjoying our time in Koh Samui, but finding it to be very touristy; full of Thai women gyrating on bars to tacky techno music/ middle aged men with beer bellies buying the company of Thai ladies/ lairy Brits everywhere you turn. Classy stuff.
Yesterday we took a tour around the island, which was quite good. A particular highlight was the elephant and monkey show, where we saw elephants stand on their heads and other such tricks. Dean volunteered himself to play goalkeeper against one of the elephants in a penalty shootout (Now there's a sentence I never thought I'd say...) We also got chance to shake hands with the monkeys, which was cool.
On the tour we also visited the 'Big Buddha', The Plai Laem temple, and the Namuang waterfall (Which turned out to be a hell of a treck actually, and I regretted the long skirt!) We also visited the Khunaram temple, which housed the mummified body of a monk who died 20 years ago. Don't think i've ever seen a dead person before. At least, not one dressed in robes and wearing sunglasses (never quite understood the sunglasses bit...) Finally, we were taken to visit the islands famous Granmother and Grandfather rocks (So called because they are shaped like male and female genitalia...I personally think there is something quite disturbing about calling genitalia after old people. Cunjures up disturbing thoughts...)
Today was less of a success. We went to see the butterfly garden, which turned out to be nothing more than a few butterflies in a big garden (I guess the title should have given it away really...) We then ventured off to watch buffalo fighting, but instead ended up on a buffalo farm in the middle of nowhere, where instead of offering buffalo fighting, we were offered a ride around the grounds on a buffalo cart. We declined politely.
One highlight of the day was that I got to ride a moped, which was the only way to get to the areas of the island we wanted to visit, but great fun. Tonight we are going to watch lady Thai boxing in a local bar, at Dean's request (I'm only going cause it's free; extravagant chick that I am)
Anyways, off to sample the 50 Baht cocktails (70B = approx 1 pound)
Claire x
