With the sun shining brightly and the forecast good, we decided to visit this National Park- Wilson's Promontory today. Affectionately known as 'The Prom', it is one of the state's best loved parks and is a refuge for an array of native wildlife including kangaroos, emus, wombats, echidnas and vividly plumed birds like rosellas. As we witnessed over lunch, the rosellas flocked to anyone with food- we had chips at the visitors area at Tidal River, and we're mobbed by them- they seemed to like Jimmy and climbed over his shoulders and head waiting for some food (I'll add photos to the album 'Wilson's Promontory). Prior to this lunch time experience, our first glimpse of wildlife was of a pair of emus grazing (see blog photo). Dave dropped me & Jimmy at Whiskey Bay for a short coastal walk of about 3kms, along Picnic Bay, through the bush to Squeaky Beach. A lovely walk meeting not another soul the whole way. Some amazing rocks and beaches along the route. Picnic Bay's high tide line was marked by hundreds of cuttlefish and we were entertained by an oyster catcher on the sands. A pleasant walk through trees and bush, we emerged with the sight of Squeaky Beach. The sand squeaks under foot- it really does this loudly! The tourist sites tell you: 'The rounded grains of quartz make a squeaking sound when you walk, giving this popular local beach its name'. So true! We loved the northern end of the beach, with its large granite boulders creating a maze of passages to explore. Meeting up with Dave again we drove up to Mt Oberon taking in the views, and on to Tidal River for some lunch. A great day again and rounded off with a good pub dinner in the Meeniyan Hotel- a spacious and warm, friendly place. I tried the Chicken Parmagianno- a dish recommended and highly contested as "the best tasted" ever by pubs serving it! It was very good as was Jimmy's steak & mushroom pie. We must say that the food in both New Zealand and Australia has been of very good quality and value- far exceeding standards in the UK from our experience. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time with the Smith family at their holiday home in Gippsland.
