Last few days in Koh Phanang have been pretty action packed, and despite me staying out of the sun, i am sunburnt again, whhhhhy?!
On Wednesday we went to the Half Moon party in the jungle, which was anazing. I have extremely sunburnt feet and so wasnt keen on going anywhere as its agony when i walk, however, after staying in until 10pm watching films we decided we'd head down the road to Same Same bar for the pre party to see if there was anyone there. Once we got there I ordered a very strong cocktail, took the ice out and held it on my feet! This seemed to do the trick, or perhaps it was the two jugs of snakebite, as I soon forgot about the pain. By midnight we were painting each other with neon paint, which now explains why every taxi and barstool has little smears of brightly coloured paint on. We arrived at the full moon party in the jungle at about 1am and it was crazy. In a clearing in the jungle were bars, a DJ up in the trees, and neon everywhere. We grabbed a drink and a balloon of laughing gas (which neither of us found particularly amusing) and started jumping up and down to the trance music.
After much 'dancing', a truely horrific toilet visit and very sore feet we headed back to Haad Rin for chicken schnitzel burgers.
The next day we didn't leave the room until 5pm, and that was just to stuff our face with hangover food (see pic) and pick up junk food supplies before going straight back to bed with a DVD.
On Wednesday we ventured out of the room and decided to go kayaking. We rented a kayak from the hotel next to ours, the safety briefing involved the guy we hired it from pointing to the kayak saying 'there you go'. We asked him where we should and shouldn't kayak, to which he pointed to where there were huge waves crashing against the rocks and said 'it's best over there'! Given it was a pretty windy day and the sea was quite choppy we stuck to the bay our hotel was in.
In hindsight I have no idea why I went kayaking with Robin again after the last time in Vietnam - I had to restrain myself from smacking him with my paddle! Once again, as I was trying to turn the kayak so we went along the shore line Robin continued to paddle forward out into the open sea! He also kept insisting I didn't need to steer, and moaned at me as i turned us head on into a few huge waves, when he was trying to turn us side on to them which would have tipped us over!! Never get in a boat which this man!
After a stressful hour of trying not to get us killed, we returned to shore and got on a bit better in the safety of the pool!!
On Thursday we moved to a villa in Ban Tai to see another area on the island (and it's closer to Walking Street where the shops are - I may not have mentioned this to Robin). Yesterday we decided to put our PADI licenses to use and went diving to Sail Rock, the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand. The weather was pretty bad whilst we were there, the current was really strong and the visibility on one side of the rock was about a meter which was really scary as we could hardly see our dive master or each other. However, when we went to the other side it improved. We dove down to 22 meters (despite only having training to go to 18!) to do a wall dive and swam around sail rock seeing various fish and some amazing corals. Despite being claustrophobic I also braved a swim into the 'chimney' which is a funnel in the rock which you swim into via a crack in the wall, it was horrible, I probably used up half my tank whilst I hyperventilated (ok it wasn't quite that bad)!!
A storm moved in when we came up so we got back on the boat and headed to another dive site closer to phanang. Lunch on the boat was curry and rice, out of plastic bowls, which was amazing, if only the boat hadn't felt like it was going to capsize whilst powering towards the next dive site. The boat swayed violently back and forth and a couple of times the captain cut the engine because the boat was so close to going over. The dive instructors had to check they hadn't lost any equipment over the side! The owner of the boat later told us it was a river boat, which explained why it couldn't cope with choppy seas (!), and that it wasn't finished, he went through a huge list of what still needed doing to the boat, including incasing the air compressor which he emphasised was 'not safe at the moment' - probably particularly because as he stood next to it with a fag whilst filling the tanks!!
The second dive was shallower with better visibility than the first dive (and much safer than being on the boat!) and we saw a lot more coral and fish, including huge barracudas, angel fish, and others which I need to look up on my little fish chart! Towards the end of the dive I couldn't equalise and had to surface as my ear hurt - Robin, ever the good buddy, didn't notice that I couldn't follow him and the dive master so I had to float around on my own until one of the other instructors appeared next to me to check I was ok!
We then headed back for dinner at the hotel and were both shattered after a 7am start so basically watched repeats of the films on tv which are on constantly, we've seen them all at least 3 times, they seen to alternative between the chipmunks, xmen and house bunny (our favourite!), they also have such excruciatingly annoying presenters in between shows that we have to change channels when they come on.
We plan to spend our last day in Koh Phanang shopping and lazing around before heading back to Samui tomorrow to get our flight back to Bangkok, where we'll spend two days doing sightseeing and shopping (now Bangkok has dried out a bit), then we will be heading back to the UK on Wednedsay night (boohoo). I'm hoping I'm going to make it back in one piece, at present I have the following ailments:
Numbness and tingling in the tip of my left index finger, which has been numb for 3 days
Sunburnt knuckles (?!) - no they arent red from beating up Robin...I have a stick for that ;)
Red rash on my feet, from god knows what
Blisters on every toe from wearing fins whilst diving yesterday
Numerous Mosquitos bites on my left leg (which I guess tastes nicer than my right leg)
...something tells me it's time to come home!!
